I am a 51 yr. old w/female. During routine blood testing, I was found to have an elevated Creatinine level of 1.15, and a Serum calcium level of 11.3 My history only consists of a hysterectomy 10 years ago for fibroid tumors, and Hypertension, controlled by medication for the past 14 years.
My only medications are Estradiol 1 mg. and Micardis 40 for hypertension. I have no symptoms of disease. I am not a diabetic, am 5'4, and weigh 140 lbs. All of my other blood values are within normal limits.
Approximately 8 months ago, it was determined that my calcium was high, my dr. attributed that to the fact that I was currently taking Micardis HCT 40 mg. & said that we would monitor it. Two months later, during a follow-up, my creatinine level was found to be elevated so he discontinued the Micardis HCT, and changed it to Micardis(without the HCT). Last week the calcium levels were repeated, still elevated, a parathyroid test was ordered and found to be within normal limits. My dr. is now referring me to a nephrologist, has made the comment that in 2006 my calcium was borderline, but he did not pursue it because I had no insurance, and now I am insured!
I have an appt. with a nephrologist this Thursday, but at the moment I NEED some reassurance, as I have naturally been on several internet sites which have TOTALLY freaked me out. On one website, it mentioned that kidney stones or colitis could be a possibility. I have read the worst scenarios, and would appreciate any opinion or comments that would ease my mind for a few days. Any hope or suggestions?
Thanks,
Kathy

Ask your dr if potassium or magnesium would be helpful in lowering your calcium level.
I believe from everything I have read that one or both of them do but consult your dr because I am not up on your condition.

Let me know what you find out. I am 39 Male on hypertension meds. I had similar blood readings on a recent test when I went in for treatment of gout. High calcium and creatinine levels. Just went back for more blood work this morning. I have read all kinds of things on the internet... that I probably shouldn't have.

For gout you want to eat little meat and eat/drink as much cherries as you can
Also a lot of greens like asparagus.

Here are two good sites

Gout Diet: Limit High Purine Foods (http://www.healthcastle.com/gout.shtml)

Foods to Avoid When Suffering From Gout (http://ezinearticles.com/?Foods-to-Avoid-When-Suffering-From-Gout&id=374153)

Hey Brocklee, So far, like yourself, I have read far too much on the internet! During the last few days, I have had a chest x-ray,mamogram,ultrasound of my kidneys, scan of my parathyroid glands, and today I will have my final test that they have ordered, thus far, a colonoscopy. I am still freaking out as I have only received the results of one test, the mamogram, which was normal. I am praying really hard that it is my parathyroid based on the alternative diagnoses I have read on the internet. I will keep you posted. Even though I have been told that I do not have kidney disease, my nephrologist is keeping me under his care until we get to the bottom of it. I DO know that it is never normal to have elevated calcium and that is what has me soooo concerned! Thanks for posting and I will keep you informed, not much reassurance out here, huh?

Keeping hydrated [ lots of water ] will help kidney function and may help lower calcium levels.

Getting off the hct part of micardis /hct was a good move.

Avoid over the counter calcium [ tums and other ant acids ]
Avoid vitamin d

Rarely does it run in families [ FHH ] due to a decreased ability to urinate calcium [ low or normal calcium in the urine despite high blood calcium.

There are a lot of other possibilities that are more worrisome. I pray that it is not one of those.

Why avoid vitamin d?
I know synthetic supplements are not good but I have been hearing that vitamin d3 is really beneficial

I know calcium is not good to take especially in some forms and without taking magnesium and potassium to help absorb it

Vitamin D aids in the body's ability to absorb calcium.

Yeah I meant to include the vitamin d again with the potassium and magnesium.

I never heard to avoid vitamin d though
