Hi All - Noob to the site but need help. We turned our Central A/C on and hear the motor running, but inside the house is not getting cold. We hose down the main unit and let it dry and turned the unit back on and out of nowhere the unit started to smoke. Please advise on what the issue may be and what the cost of the repair would be.
Thank you in advance for all of your assistance or feedback.

Issue could be lots of things... did you turn all power off before hosing down the unit?
Chances are you have ruined it now since something got wet and started to smoke when you started it again.
Where did the smoke come from? What exactly was hapenoing before you hosed it down? We need more information...

What was the reason for hosing down the unit?

Technically, when I had the system installed the technician said to hose it down once in awhile to have the unit cleaned... so my stupid a$$ hosed it down.
The unit was not running if that's what you mean when I hosed it down. When the A/C is turned on it seems like the motor wants to run but the fan is not moving and that's when the smoke starts coming out.
I know it needs to be serviced, but I was hoping the whole unit doesn't need to be replaced.

Cleaning the coils is a goos idea... but you have to kill all power going to the unit. 240 volts and water do not go hand in hand.
Fan might have fried due to water.
Time to get a tech out to look at it.

Is this a reoccuring summertime problem? Or did it just start?
You could have a lack of insulation problem
You could have some ductwork that has come loose
You could have some ducts closed off or covered up,(supply or return)
You could need the system cleaned (condenser and evaporater)
You could be low on freon
You could have fan motors no doing their jobs
The list can continue on,, you might should need to call out a local tech to look over the problem
