I just got a old 2-3 person hot tub. The pump motor is a 16.4 amp11 volt and I believe the heater controller is as follows:

Porter & Blumfield
> KUP 14A15 - 120
> 120V 50/60 Hz
> Industrial Rated
> 3A 1/hp 600 VAC

> 10A 1/3 hp 120 VAC
> 6 2/3A 1/3 HP 250 VAC
> Appliance Rated
> 10A 250 VA
The previous owner did not have a GFCI breaker in the connection. He was using 10/3 with a ground wiring to a subpanel.

What size and type of GFCI breaker do I need in the GFCI Breaker box. (ie 20 amp 2 pole, 20 amp tandem or a 20 amp 1 pole breaker)?

What size of breaker should I use in the main panel?

It should have Supply connections, If 4 wire/240 volts, use a double pole 240 volt GFI breaker, Nameplate should say.

The only thing on the Nameplate or label is "Poly-Recliner Spa Shell" 207270 Manufactured by Polynesian Pools & Spas Inc EXT 46 1982. There are no electrical plates in the control box under the spa.

I see you only provide partial info on the pump motor:

The pump motor is a 16.4 amp11 volt

Finish and provide the voltage rating of the pump.

If you eant 120 volts, this motor alone will need a 30 amp breaker.

Next you provide the heater controller info, but no details on the actual heater, such as wattage or voltage.

Knowing only the controller ratings is irrelevant.

Can you find more detail on the heater itself?

You may start with a 30 amp 120/240 volt circuit with a 30 amp 2 pole breaker and #10 wire, but then what if the unit needs more? You will then need to install all #8 wire and a 2 pole 40 amp breaker, or whatever will be needed.

I realize this is why your asking, so you do it right the first time. We just need more complete an accurate info to be able to help.

The heater plate was on the back side of the heater control 5.5KW 240v
The pump motor is 115 volts / 16.4 / 4.4 60 Hz,
There is a 30 amp what appears to be a breaker in the wiring box
I tried to send a picture but the file is too large for this site.

The photos show contactors. I get that you think there is a 30 amp breaker but could not upload a photo of that.

The 5.5 KW heater at 240 volts will draw 23 amps. The pump motor draws 16 amps at 120 volts.

Is it possible that the tub had one 240 volt circuit for the heat and a 120 volt circuit for the pump? This is not typical.

If both the heat and pump need one circuit, my calculations show that a 50 Amp 4 wire 120/240 volt feeder, with two hots, a neutral, and an equipment ground is needed. This can be either #6-3 Romex or #8-3 MC cable.

Do your best to upload a picture of the device you think is a breaker, and perhaps a wiring diagram.

If both heat and pump use one circuit, I do not see how it worked with a 30 amp circuit.

The photos were 2 shots of what I thought was a 30 amp breaker. I am trying to locate a manual for the spa but it is over 20 years old an the company is no longer in busincess.
