My parents rented an animated movie for me a few times when I was younger that I would like to find again. I watched it sometime between 1980-1986. It was about the same time in life when I saw Watership Down and The Last Unicorn. It left me with a strong emotion, one of feeling helpless, stranded and lost. I'm trying to find out if these emotions were from the movie of something else, but I can't remember much from the movie. Here is what I remember from it:

-There are two main characters. Friends or siblings. I think one is male and one is female.
-I'm pretty sure they go on a journey to find something or someone.
-Along the way they get separated.
-It's possible this story takes place underwater or in space.

That's all I remember and I'd love if someone has some ideas. It's even possible it was an anime type movie.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I can think of 2 possibilities:

The Flight of Dragons (1982) (http://amazon.imdb.com/title/tt0083951/)

Wizards (1977) (http://amazon.imdb.com/title/tt0076929/)

It doesn't sound like flight of dragons (one of my fav movies)

Could it be Escape to Witch Mountain (1995) (TV) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112985/)

Thanks to you both. I looked at each of those movies and unfortunately they are not what I'm looking for.

I almost feel like the main characters are not human. Or since it was animated almost not human. I keep coming back to underwater. But maybe since it was "dark" or "mysterious" that's what I remember. You know? I also think of The Last Unicorn as a dark film... not because it wasn't vibrant or colorful, but because it left my child-self feeling afraid, sad, or confused.

One reason I feel like it might have been anime is because I vaguely remember the heads or eyes or some part of the characters being very large or spherical.

Any more ideas?

Probably way off but thought I'd throw this in here, maybe the Hobbit or the Lord of the rings trilogy. Those were dark and kind of scary for children in the early eighties.

Good idea fiend101! The lord of the rings cartoon-movie always left me with a feeling of dread when I was little
