Hi!

I live in a basement and there is intermittently a strong sewage smell that comes from two places. There is a drain in the floor and a drain in the shower stall. Both smell bad enough that it has driven us from our apartment more than once.

The house is very old... and as far as I know the piping under the house is all connected..

I had a plumber come look and he said that it was probably the ground water that was causing the smell and that there was nothing I could do about it...

Any suggestions?? Its driving me insane! My bathroom smells almost constantly...

First, snake out and clear both drains. Make very sure the floor drain trap has water in it. Try this for the smell. Tonight before bedtime Take a 1/2 gallon of bleach and pour it down the drain and let set over night. Next morning ,(and this is important) flush out the drain with two large pans of boiling water to loosen the grease and flush the mess out. The bleach will make the hair slippery and began to dissolve it and the hot water will melt the grease and flush the mess away.
. This should make your drains smell better. With all chemicals used in drain cleaning proper ventilation should be observed. Good luck, Tom
