I need some help!

I am replacing a Honeywell TH5220D series thermostat with a programmable Hunter 44860. When I matched up the current wire scheme, everything seemed to work except for the air conditioner. When the thermostat showed the A/C on, it was actually just the fan running and blowing outside air in.

The Honeywell is wired like this:

Yellow wire
Blue wire
White wire
Green wire
Red wire (has a jumper from R to RC)

So, I hooked up the wires the same on the Hunter but had no luck! I think there's a brown and an orange wire still stuck in the wall, but they aren't being used. Do I need to use them here for this new thermostat? It seems like there is a simple solution here, I just can't figure it out.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hunter stats always have problems. The way you have it wired should be right.

Y- yellow
w-white
r- red jumped to rc
g- green
c-blue

Any idea why the a/c isn't kicking on? Does there need to be another jump somewhere?

No, not that I can see, was yellow, or blue hooked to y on the old stat?

The yellow was hooked to Y. The blue wire is hooked to B.

Hunter stats always have problems.Sad, but true. If you fail to screw up the installation, relax - the Hunter will screw it up for you...

Is this a gas furnace with ac?

No, it's electric. And it's in two parts. One part is outside on the ground and the other is in the attic. I think it's a heat pump, but the wiring diagram in the Hunter book shows the wiring scheme I'm using as a "traditional HVAC" system. Ugh!!

If you have a heatpump then the old stat should have had more wires hooked to it. You say the brown and oraange were not used? If they were used on the old stat then this new stat will not work for you.

Sounds like I don't have a heat pump. Sadly, I have no idea how to tell the difference. What I do know is I appreciate your help and really want to figure out how to get the A/C part of this to work. If you think it should be working already with the current wiring scheme, maybe I'll just give up on the Hunter.

I see no way that you could have a heatpump, if the o was not connected. This is what switchs it from heat to cool. Get us the model number and brand from outside and may be we can figure this out.

Also outside look in the to of the unit and see if you have one of these.

The units outside are Goodman units. The model # is CPRT36-1 and I looked inside and found something that looked like your photo. If it attaches correctly, here is the photo.

This one is gettin' interesting... the reversing circuit on Goodman products is powered in cooling (O terminal on the thermostat) but you mentioned earlier that the "B" terminal was used (typically powers the reversing circuit in heating)...

Yup... never used an "O". I'm pretty ignorant with this stuff so bear with me... but the orange and brown (and I think there was another colored wire) are not used. They are tucked up in the wall. I assume the "O" is the orange wire... it's one of the tucked up wires.

Is my whole system FUBAR?

Even if the b is the reversing valve the oudoor unit should be doing something. Weather heat or cool. Keep in mind that you may have to wait 10 minutes for it to come on 5 min delay on stat and 5 min delay on outdoor unit.

Again - ignorance... not quite sure what that means. Is the timing issue something I can change on the thermostat? The 10 minute intervals?

Its just safetys, turn it back on to ac and let it run for 5 minutes after your indoor blower kicks in and see if anything comes on. It may be in heat mode or ac mode so you will have to feel the air. Is you hunter stat made for a heat pump??

I'll give that a try. So, based on the Goodman part # and what you've seen, is my system a heat pump system or a "traditional HVAC"?

Heat pump, inless someone made some modifications to make it a ac only.
