I am working at a new and used car dealership in Ohio and we recently found out that we will be losing are new car lines "pontiac/cadillac" and the question I have is can I collect unemployment if I quit due to the ability to sell new cars. I can not sell the cars that I used to beable to, the owners don't seem to want to lay anyone off- "probably because it may cost them unemployment money. So they would rather watch their salse people starve until they just quit! I would rather just be on unemployment and go to school for something else cause selling cars isn't what it used to be. I don't want to just quit and then not beable to get unemployment! Anyone have any advice or know if I could collect unemployment due to the condition of the auto industry and the dealer I work for. You MAY be able to collect unemployment because you lost the line. But, for sure, if you collect, you won't be able to go to school. You need to be searching for full time work in your profession.

Now, things might be different because of the difficulties your industry is in. I don't know. I'll bet you can find out with a phone call.

If your income gets cut because your dealership won't have as many lines to sell, you may be able to claim unemployment. Just call your local state Department of Labor to confirm.

If you are strictly on commission and not salary you can't get unemployment. Only if you are on hourly or salary can you collect. If you quit you won't be able to collect. You did state something about the sales people starving so I guess you are on commission and maybe some small hourly or salary. If you were laid off you would be able to collect unemployment but only for the weekly amount of salary and not your commission amounts.

There are some approved programs out there that unemployment will let you attend school. You must be approved to attend the school though before you try to collect unemployment benefits. The schools are usually only a few months though and are basically trade schools - not college.
