I live in NYC. My son was caught shoplifting when he was 13. It was his first and only offense. The value of the property was about $50.00. The store, Target, called me and said I owed them over $300. They said the law allowed them to charged five times the amount of the value of the item that was attempted to shoplifted. Is this true and am I, as the parent responsible. I understand that a 13 year old in NY is not responsible for criminal acts of this nature simply because of his age. Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you

You say when he was 13, but when was that ? Maybe they charge interest.

Yes, as a parent you are responsible for your child's actions. It would be no different than if he stole a vehicle and caused an accident; you would be financially liable.

As already asked, when did your son commit the crime? Was he convicted? When did Target contact you?
