Hi all,

I'm a canadian student on a J1 visa, currently working in the US for the summer. As a non resident, does anyone know if I am exempt from the NYS and NYC taxes.
Or does claiming as a non-resident only exempt you from NYC taxes. Also, which form would I fill out for the NYS - IT2104 / IT2104.1 / IT2104 E

Thank you,
Spencer

Hi,

You are not exempt from paying taxes, some of them you will get back, once you file your tax return. Don't forget to ask W-2 from your employer on end of the summer or when you leave your job, although they should send it to you on the beginig of next year.

Spencer:

As an international student, you should be exempt from NY CITY taxes, because only NY City residents are subject to those taxes.

You will be subject to NY STATE taxes on all money earned while working inside NY State borders.
