It would only make sense that workers have a right to a copy of their performance review to learn what needs improvement.

I am curious because management has given me oral notice of my performance review results, but did not supply me with a copy for my records. Now that I am applying for jobs, I would like to put a portfolio together of all of my accomplishments. I supposedly received a perfect score on the review.

However, when returning to my former employer for a copy I was rejected based upon the reason that the document is internal and confidential. Is there any validity inthis claim?

If it is that companies policy to give all reviews orally and not in writing, even to some, then you are out of luck. However, if they gave some folks a printed copy and now refuse you they are open to a legal challenge. However, think about it, if you had to sue them over this might they add an addendum to your old review,

Legally you can request a copy of your employee file, but rather than wasting time and effort fighting them on this, a recommendation letter from a supervisor or manager would be a good substitute.
