Hi,

I live in El Paso, TX.

I am going to buy a used car. The seller still needs $1000 to pay off the car. He told me that he will go to his credit union with me, pay off the car loan, get the title and transfer the title to me right there. He told me that it is good for me (the buyer) so that I do not need to pay the sales tax at the county tax office.

Is it true? Should I trust him?

Please reply. Thank you very much!

I would write the bill of sale indicating a down payment of $1,000, balance on delivery of title. Both of you sign it so you have a binding contract. Go to the credit union, give him the $1,000. He gets the title, signs it over to you; you give him the balance of the money. Deal done. -- I don't see how it would change your tax liability, though. It seems the state would still expect their money based on the sales price.
