I have two cases brought against me that is going to court ordered mediation. I only work 14 hours a week and make little money. My husband supports us. As the cards are in my name only, I am wondering if I should take my name off our joint checking account and open my own so they can't take all our money. I am a student and need that money to pay for babysitting this summer. Any suggestions? Thanks!

There is no straightforward answer to your question. Removing your name from the accounts can't hurt. But it may not resolve the problem either. If your husband is held to be liable for your debts, I doubt that removing your name will make a difference.

Several facts may come into play: what state you live in, when the debt was incurred, and what was it for. The following link may help. But you will need legal advice from an attorney in your state for a completely reliable answer.
