View Full Version : Getting rid of mushrooms

I have a area in my concrete patio around the pool that used to have a plum tree in it. The squirrels kept eating my plums, so I chopped it off and dug a lot of the root out. It has been three years. I filled with sand and rock and covered with brick, so it was even with the patio. We covered it with an outdoor rug and put a dining room table on it.

We just noticed a fungus growing through the rug from below (had lots of rain this winter) I pulled the rug back and removed the fungus from below and scraped it from the top with a spatula, which was not easy, almost like glue, but I new it was a fungus. (we could smell it) I picked up as much spores as possible.

Is there anything I can spray on it and the rug to get rid of anything remaining? I don't want to deal with that again. It looked very alien.

I hope I gave you enough information. Thanks!

But Dahlia, the spores are already spread, so that would be an impossible task. All you can do is keep fighting them down until they go away and give up.

I agree, it probably did look alien, yuck.

You can ask at your garden centre and I hope it isn't something toxic.

Thanks Tick, I was so hoping I could do something about it. We had some other trees removed and the stumps were not removed, because they were in a rock garden and the mess would have been incredible. I have been pulling gigantic mushrooms off those for a year and it seems they do not want to come back.
I do have 2 dogs that show no interest in them at all, after a year or so. Do you think I should worry? Can't I drown the area in bleach or ammonia or round up? I can handle the alien thing, now I'm worried about the pups.:(

Well that's the thing, you know, the dogs. You worry about what you can and can't use, so the best defence is no defence. I guess you just have to keep fighting them until you don't see them anymore. If you drown the area in bleach you will kill of some things you don't want to, ammonia, the same thing.

I can suggest you try baking soda. That may do it you know. Please let me know. It isn't like baking soda is expensive and not like it will harm anything like pets, kids or other plants.

How about if we mix up some concrete and then pour it in over the bricks and rock and sand and fill the hole. It won't match what we have on our deck, but I would think that it might burn whatever is in there and hold off any mushrooms. I'm just thinking that they might come up through the crack between the old patio and the new concrete. (in a circle) in the meantime I'm going to try the baking soda and just cover it. Thanks:)
