K. wow bummer about the root.. i think i'd post something in home improvement or exterior home improvement or the "other home and garden" section.. and hmm thats actually what its called

Good idea there. one of each would give a very good comparison of how they both would do in that and moving through that environmentIf I would have done something years ago, it wouldn't of been such a "Pandora's Box" now.

Every now an then I come up with a good one.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I was soooo impressed with your UDT BB,Thank You! I'm beginning to think topseyturvey uses the determinate variety. (their's shows more bush)

that I was going to make a comment and then I saw your anaconda root :eek: and got really impressed with the Saw. I forgot what i was doing and gave you a greenie for the Saw!:p
I have one of those, but not allowed to use it when DH is in town. ::SHHHH::I was impressed you knew the "nickname".
Yea, I don't know what's up with that. I started by teaching the niece's an nephews how to paint concrete with water, then real painting jobs, I had 'em using hammers, saws, an drills when they were 5.
They were happy, I was happy, an they were proud to really help Unca teve.

Sorry about the concrete, I have had to deal with something like that, but lucky for me just bricks (which was a pain) It took me two years to kill some Poplar roots that went all through my garden. (another story) I'm good now.:)Ahh... It's okay... My own fault, see "pandora's box". That slab must go 200lbs. Going out tomorrow for the 12" blades

All's quiet on the home front.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I'm 'bout to put BB's toms in a sack with some apples or banana's an tie it snug... if you know what I mean...
My Dad usta' grow pickles in a bottle. Then people would wonder "howdja do dat?"

I was also thinking again 'bout that asexual post and the impatiens... I chopped off 'bout 12" of one of BB's leaders, stuck it in some H2O and I'm just waitin' to see if it roots.

Anyone need maintenance on chainsaws start a thread, I just finished mine.
Did I see a "contest" on the Roses thread??

Growing pickles in a bottle... now how's trhat done..
I can't wait to see if the BB roots in water. I've always wondered that since I know you can do it with flowers and plants. I also know that to replant some kinds of trees all you need to do is take a cutting from the tree and stick the cutting right in the ground. Now I can't see tomatoes doing that but I am pretty sure they might root in water like your trying to get them to do :D

growing pickles in a bottle... now hows trhat done..Well... since you forced it outa' me, :rolleyes: and I don't think Dad would mind.
Living in N.S. you've seen ships built in a bottle, haven't you?

Find a slender bottle (like an ol' time soda bottle), and gently place the baby/developing pickle through the mouth of the bottle, into the chamber below. Then just wait until it grows.
The bottle needs support Don't worry if the pickle doesn't go in far enough it'll grow in. apparatus needs to be kept shaded/ cool, because of the added heat the container creates. Harvest, when it shows a larger diameter than the mouth of the bottle, but not pressing against the sides of the container. Novelty can be "pickled" use wax or cork for topper Place on mantle, bookshelf, or windowsill, wait for "comments"

*turns down lights before going to the roses thread*"Time will tell". For tree cuttings I also applied root hormone.

Wow... I didn't expect it to be so dangerous either.. though it does not list the inert ingredients which is a bit of a bummer because you never know what they could do to human and animals either.. wow I didn't think it could be used for so many different things either
Quite the toxicity level of some chemical ingredients to I see

Anything that emits "Ethylene" Gas (apples) as "they" ripen.
Will ripen certain other organics as long as they are in proximity
To one another, such as, a closed paper bag.

Wow! I have always just put them on newspaper on the kitchen counter and it worked great. Actually I just found out about that last year.:)

KUXJ
Jul 21, 2009, 05:13 PM
Toms, also emit ethylene when they ripen, If you were to wrap your toms with that newsprint,
You'll find they will ripen faster.

Unless you want to try jmjoseph's recipe,
wrap any greenies left at the end of the season in newsprint. Place them in something like a milk crate Start with a section of newsprint Then a layer of wrapped toms section of newsprint layer of toms till you reach the top Then cover with a section store them in a cool to warm dark place and check'em 'bout once a week.

Depending on how many you start with, you could have fresh toms past Christmas. That's what GrandMa did.

Ethylene is also like a hormone to a plant, and it uses it to give them a preservativeness... :confused: (Eddie, get the dictionary).. that helps the fruit to stay fresher longer.

(Newsprint = Newspaper. That's what its called in the Industry....Not until it leaves the Newspaper Production Facility is it called "Newspaper" I worked for the local paper for 32years, and old habits are hard to break.)

By the way... I got my "snake" out, see pix.

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), July 24th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XIII:

Not sure if anyone caught my joy at seeing BB's first ripening tom earlier this week page 26, post 256:
https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/gardening-plants/upside-down-tomatoes-352932-26.html

Then b con'd a sneak preview out of me, page 27, post 268:
https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/gardening-plants/upside-down-tomatoes-352932-27.html

Most recent... see pix
Its just 'bout there, maybe Sunday.
88 days since April 28, 2009

Rainfall for the week at BBX 1.28” ~ KCXY 0.84”
Next Chance of Showers, T-storms today into tonight, POP 40%
New rainfall amounts between a tenth and, quarter inch except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Since I'm trying a new propagation method for toms, BB's vertical growth has stopped at 59”,
And his girth should start to increase, its at 44” now.

Taking a hint from starting impatiens cuttings in H2o, I am experimenting with BB's main stem, see pix.
As you can see, there are whitish nodules on the stem, where I'm hoping the roots will begin to start.
Those little nubs in the crotch, where I trimmed the larger leaves are actually sucker stems starting to grow.

When first placed into the H2o, air bubbles formed around the individual hairs on the stem,
And have since reduced to these nodules.

It looks like I'm not the only one to have tried this: Toms from cuttings, Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHMI_enUS335US335νm=100≠wwindow=1&q=starting+tomatoes+from+cuttings&aq=f&oq=&aqi=)

Speaking of propagation...

One of my other duties in the morning is helping our yellow squash to pollinate.
I noticed that it has a lot of flowers, but its not fruiting, so I did what all good AMHD'ers do...

I searched high... I searched low, up, down, in, out, over here, over there... over hill, over dale...
what's that eddie?....oh yea...back to topic
Well, after careful observation I saw there weren't any flying insects flyin' around
So I got out my trusty Q-tip and I'm givin' all the blossoms a hand... Oops...

I mean I'm pollinating them artificially by dabbing each blossom.
I'm sooo excited, I can't wait to see fruition!. b your rubbin off on me

Welll... That's 'bout it for this week, all the chores are done.

Need to run an errand an when I get back watch a little of nascar practice.
Have dinner ready for the DW, wait for the next T-storm...

Oh an eddie needs to change the oil in the plane, somthin 'bout JD and pineapples.

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

k

Edited at 4:25pm edt:

Had one hellacious T-storm come through at 3:24pm edt to 3:47pm edt. Dropped 0.72" here at BBX

New totals:
Rainfall for the week at BBX 2.00” ~ KCXY 1.11”

Just an update on "rooting" BB's cutting.

The pix below shows the nodules are getting larger, and there's also an interesting development.

There is growth around the stem and aborted shoot that reminds me of the filaments of the Lophoporate phyla or more commonly know as tube worm. Bottom pix.

The yellow squash has finally received its first flying pollinator, and I notice he/she did a much better job than me, so its all right with me if they want the job.

We have had such hot weather that I need to water at 2 pm even though they will be getting water at 3 pm. They are not just limpy, but almost dried out looking. They get water at 8 am when I am at work, but at 104 on and off for the last month, nothing is helping.

I'm thinking about moving my Hybrid Early Girl into a shadier area.

I plan on making Salsa on Thursday or Friday. Tuesday is corn day, unless I get lazy, then Wednesday.:)

Although my climate is not as harsh as in your area I am having a similar experience.

In this past week we have received almost 2" of rain with 0.22" last evening, and when I went out this morning BB was limp.

Moving Early Girl would be prudent I would even suggest an insulator for the container, like an old blanket or cardboard box.

Next year I'm planning on setting up at least one of my containers in a Zeer Pot fashion The Zeer Pot (http://www.scienceinafrica.co.za/2004/september/refrigeration.htm)
Even though the Nigerians are claiming it's their invention, and there are many Fathers of Thermodynamics.
Homo Sapiens has been using it for millennia.

Unfortunately Climate Prediction Center (http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/90day/fxus05.html) Has officially declared an El Nino' into the fall of 2010
Which should mean "Status Quo" for the U.S. until then.

Salsa's good... I making Cold Pasta Salad.

I thought about it this afternoon, but worried it might not work because of no cloth over the top, but I guess anything might help. :DAnything that would provide cover from the high temps will help. It also helps if you create an air layer between the container and insulating material.
An example:
surround, but leave a 1 or 2" inch space away from the container with ½ to ¾" hardware cloth. http://icwdm.org/Images/voles/hardwarecloth.jpg
Cover cloth with 2" of compost, adobe, newsprint or even concrete thats only wet enough
to mold around cage, but don't forget concrete will get heavy. Have similar, but larger cage ready to place around original structure.
to hold the material you choose, in place. Keep saturated with water before it dries out. Optional tube in top for direct watering of plant After thinking 'bout it. this a reverse zeer pot. In a real zp all sides are touching,
I'll have to experiment to see how efficient this design is.

wow weird looking tube worm. do you think they occur naturally in the h2o? use tap water or water from a rain barrel?Yes they are some of natures creatures. But tap or rain may be too pure. Hi! Chey5782, and welcome to UDT :)

Wait so your cutting grew a tubeworm? Did I read that right? eww? Are they ok for the plant?That's what's interesting, I don't know. Although it's possible some type of organism has started its life, and is creating a symbiotic relationship with the cutting.
My reference to tube worms came from the observation of the fronds or antennae waifing in the currents of the water jug.

Are they OK for the plant?
Only further observation will tell that story.

K,

Love the page. Its coming out well so far. I see you have a picture and link for the SOHO site. Maybe a little writeup about light, solar occurrences and the implications might be nice to put in there.. or some more pictures. Love the one you have posted. Seen some real nice ones on the site too. Your Sights and Sounds Page. IS WORKING... the whale sounds are lovely... do you know what species of whale is the one singing on the track? I think adding animal (marine and/or land) sound bytes would be an amazing feature on there... After listening to the one I wanted to hear more :D

Love how you have a comments/questions page. The barter/sale page is a nice touch. I like how you allow others to post to that too.
Your credits page is a little blank "add content here" it looks a little lonely. LOL but all and all I think your doing awesome on it. The design of the page, the color scheme it all looks
Wonderful. Though you have a link "http://www.spacecentre.no" that is under both science and astronomy.. you can't click on the link under the astronomy heading but you can click on it under the space heading. Feel free to talk to me about the site anytime.. id love to help you with anything I can..

From This (http://www.wilderness-survival.net/sea-2.php) site:
Wilderness Survival: Sea Survival - Seashores

Worms
Coastal worms are generally edible, but it is better to use them for fish bait. Avoid bristle worms that look like fuzzy caterpillars. Also avoid tubeworms that have sharp-edged tubes. Arrowworms, alias amphioxus, are not true worms. You find them in the sand and are excellent either fresh or dried.

So... You mite want to have a few pre-cocktails :D

I just finished a big bowl of spaghetti :eek:

As far as cooking/eating them, I would prepare them like squid or octopus... Ever eat raw Oysters?

Sorry for the visuals while eating spaghetti, mmmm, yes have eaten raw oysters but they are not one of my favourites. Too much work if I do them at home. I have eaten just about everything else from the sea though.

News from the Bucket (nftb), July 31st, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Extra Edition I:XIV:

As Mr Burns so eloquently put it.

I have a little time before the DW and me get rollin' today, so I'm able to shoot You an Xtra.

BB's pretty much slowed on the growth and has kicked in on ripening his fruit.
Harvested two toms last week and there are two 'bout half way with three just starting.

For next year I'm planning on 1 Determinate and at least two Indeterminate, if you recall the former ripens all at once, the latter slowly. BB's a latter.

Could have used a bunch of toms last night as I was making hamburger goulash, and only had one can of Hunt's.

Suppose ta rain pretty good today calling for 3/4” avg. I hope the worst holds off till the we're done today.

what's that eddie?.....oh yea.....tube worms

Still haven't found out what that growth is on BB's rooting, but it is getting larger.

Ah.. I think I hear the DW stirring... Time for XoXoXo's

ps... Head's up! Went to attach pixs and evil filemonster reared its head took 4x to finnaly get them in...

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

That's do-able, how'bout....waves crashing...Tug Boat, an Fog Horn?
What's that eddie?.....Yea...I'll try for a Bi-Plane dogfight too.....:rolleyes:

I know more....We went on a whale trip in the Bay of Maine.
Sighted a small pod 3 Adults 1 calf. You could almost touch the one. Hated to go back in. :(
Cutting looks, none worse for wear, an yes the worm thing is getting larger, pix tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments on new site, will be working on improvements.

Those damn copyright laws blew all of the free stuff “out'a the water”. It's harder to find, but its out there.

You can't whale sight in N.S. :confused: com'on, there's got to be somehow... Otherwise you have to go down to Yarmouth for the Yarmouth to Bar Harbor - CAT Ferry (http://www.catferry.com/)
For you, and DH round trip, that's $360US includes port & security fees + $50US for vehicle. Fuel surcharge not included. Don't forget Passports.

There used to be several watchers in bar harbor, but they've since consolidated to this Bar Harbor Whale Watching Tours (http://www.barharborwhales.com/default.php) The Watcher we used is at this location. Their $15 cheaper now, but you don't get to be out as long (3.5hours, as compared to 5) that's the length of time your actually waiting in 'bout a 2 to 3 sq. mile area out in the Bay (Your 45miles out). It doesn't include travel time out an back.

I wish I had more pix, but most everything is on video. That's us in the pix... (10years ago) There's a story behind the pix... It was humorous to me at the time, still is...
As you wait to board the boat, the Co. insists they take pix of you, and people in line couldn't figure out why? You receive a small frige magnet, but don't have to take the “Deluxe Package” an added $50.

Well... The one mate overheard me, when I told people around me “Its so, they have a pictorial record of everybody, in case the boat sinks.” As far as I'm concerned, It's a true statement, but no one from the Co. would confirm or deny... You should have seen the looks I got. I can still feel where Kathy kicked me in the leg. :eek:

Maine Office of Tourism - Whale Watching Trips (http://www.visitmaine.com/attractions/nature/whale_watching/)

After I typed my novella 'bout our experience. I searched for Whale watching Nova Scotia (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHMI_enUS335US335νm=100≠wwindow=1&ei=86d0SviaBJ-vtgfvm9WWCQ&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=whale+watching+Nova+Scotia&spell=1)

So there you go...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I dug a little deeper into my chest o' marks, and found out that it shouldn't take as long as it is for roots to develop. Four days tops and here I am two weeks later. I'm just starting to see actual roots.
I still haven't been able to find out what that growth is, but Ill keep searchin'.
I have some toms in a paper bag with a greenish banana and an apple (to be eaten later) Thanks for the tips.:)
I have one very icky tom plant right now, it is just doing nothing and turning to dust. I have one other (the one that I moved away from the others) that is producing toms and they look great except for the bottom half (Romas) are flat and brown. Half of the tom is perfect, but really small. I'm just going to cut them in half and use for salads.
I always liked thinking 'bout this poem when we started a trip.
May your travels be safe.
Sea Fever
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick is over.
Hi! Everyone :)
News from the Bucket (nftb), August 7th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XV:
I thought that while I'm sitting here waiting my turn at Downloading Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 Professional for free, I'd work on this.
BB's doing okay, has a few “old” leaves/stems coming along that I just go and pinch off, but as far as pruning goes I know I won't be doing that anymore.
Observation, Reason?
BB remains healthy, but he's not expanding his growth either in size or fruit set
Fruit that is there, is okay and ripening but the production of fruit stems has ground to a halt.
No matter what, I have to get Anak BB into dirt today.
Observation, Reason?
As you can see by the pix, real roots have started to form along with the tube worm fungus, and the foliage of Anak has started to turn purple
Rainfall for the week at BBX 0.47” ~ KCXY 0.70”
Next Chance of Showers, T-storms 20% Saturday into Sunday, Saturday night 30%
Not sure if a lot or any have picked up on the most recent EL Nino' discussions (http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/MJO/enso.shtml), looks like our weather patterns will remain the same until the fall of 2010.
It is now 12:23pm edt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is now 3:50pm edt

Well... I finally finished with that Paragon (DL) Download...

The reason I stopped with the NFTB, was because it took from ¼ to 9, to a ¼ after noon just to lock in to the DL server then the other 2hours an 52minutes to DL :mad:
Now I don't have a screamer, an it's not a clunker either, I can usually do 119Meg in 'bout 10”.

:( not sure if I'm ever going to go Christmas shopping with the world again. :(

:) But it gave me time to get some things done, I did get Anak repotted, and there's a special surprise guest holding the new arrival, (for any of you that saw my members page pix, this new one is at least 10years later, and yes eddie, 'bout 40lbs heavier.....)

(Maybe a contest? Guess Steve's weight?....maybe later.)

Working on setting up a tile drain for the one side of the house, that's pretty much ready to charge into, and I cleared a short planter in the front so I can plant a Hibiscus there.
End of season at the big blue box, cheap couldn't resist, hope I don't end up with poison from clearing out.

Later when the DW comes home, I'm makin' stir-fry veggies with fresh bangers, on that covered up grill in the 'biscus pix, little this... little that... oh, its so good!

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

JD hope you had tons 'o fun :D

I totally had a blast.. concert was sold out.. glad I got my tickets when they were first put out to sell... around 84,000 people showed up. Staying at the tribute campground was worth the 100 bucks in total for the both of us. Live DJ at the camping site.. played until 2 am the first night and noon to 6 the day of the concert

From what we've heard and found out they might be retiring so maybe no more ac/dc ever... glad I went.
First concert I've ever been to.. the crowd screaming, dancing, the bass pulsing through your body, I don't think anyone could stand still even if they were forced to. They played every old song I wanted them to... even 'whole lotta rosie" and "for those about to rock (we salute you)"

K, WOW its roots sure grew a lot from the last picture I had seen... do you have a new closeup of the tube worm thingy ? :D
UDT is looking good. Sad that its production is not increasing and its growth is not increasing... do you think the pruning was the cause of that?

Doing drainage is never fun. I learned that when we had to replace all of our outdoor drainage around the house.

OOO a Hibiscus.. pretty :D. how was the bbq?

Yes it is :( ….purrty sure...

With today's heat DW laid the law down...
No outside activities, she doesn't want to see me lying in the lawn with the tractor runnin' circles 'round me.

Neighbor reen gave us two “snow on the mountain's” and I got them in just before the storm front yesterday (63mph) they look a little droopy yet, but the 'biscus isn't doing too bad.

There is a chemical that my boyfriends work uses for fertilizing their flowers, one for budding and one for growth.. they are an extreme chemical and can kill a plant when used wrong but I'll tell you it does amazing things... Aug 24, 2009, 09:43 AM
Well, I have 10 or so plants..
.The Big Boy in the far back has given me 2 rather large, close to the size
Of a grapefruit, that's it so far (but they were pretty)
.My SFF UDT has about 6 on it and I think I have got about 4 previously
.The other SFF has about 12 on it right now getting ready for picking in
The next couple days and have got about 20 perfect tennis ball size
Earlier.
.My Mama Mia has given me at least 30 so far size of a oval golf ball, but that's the one with the disease, so I have been chopping off the
Ends and using the rest for salads.
.My other Mama Mia has normal size Romas 4" long, width of a golf
Ball and I have got at least 30 so far
.Early Girl gave me about 4, then shiveled up, there is still about 5 on her
Waiting.
.Other Early Girl is still producing and have got about 20 so far
.My 2 Beef Master (I think that's what they were) haven't done much, but
Maybe they don't want to show off until it cools off a little
.My Celebrity, that I had in a pot and then transferred into the ground has
4 on it and looks like it needs water, but doesn't.

I think I might have forgot a couple, but I'm at work and I'm trying to picture them in my pea brain.

They should keep producing for a couple months still:eek:

I heard Eddies plane last night, so I thought and hoped Steve was back from vacation.

AND HE IS!!

Hmmm... I see our Forestry major isn't going to let us off the hook easily :rolleyes:

I'd have to dig it up, but I believe I mentioned 20-25 in an earlier post. At last count 45" ago it was up to 43, but BB's viability is starting to suffer, Anak is growing and has one fruit that is getting larger.

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), August 28th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XVI:

My apologies on missing nftb the last two weeks, I know how it is when you get used to something, and then it doesn't happen. More 'bout that later.

To be perfectly honest the last two weeks have been kind of a blur, especially from the 14th to the 22nd. BB and Anak BB have had to pretty much fend for themselves.

Not much rain to speak of 'bout a half inch or so here and at KCXY, but showers, and T-storms for the weekend. POP 100% into tomorrow morning, then 50% till Sunday afternoon. Total accumulation up to 1.25”

Anak has had a better go of it than BB (see pix) because his requirements are not as demanding as BB's.

Anak should go into a larger container that I would like to see carry over through winter, BB has 22 green toms in varying sizes that I'll either fry up with jimjoseph's recipe or try to ripen as per Grandma's technique.

JD those pixs of your bounty look wonderful, I hope to match you for next year, and it sure looks like you had a blast during your Oregon trip.

B, my apologies on my off the cuff remark. It looks better on the pix. You have to add 3" for the ruler case to the 11 to make 14" tall for Anak.

Now...

********* ******** *********

For 'bout the last six months I have been struggling with a physical problem that I have gone to four different Doctors to figure out.

Why, after I work I end up all tired, and fatigued with total muscular and skeletal pain for the next three days. I got so tired I didn't even want to sleep. The fatigue would go away, but I continued to have the pain.

Finally, in late July, a breakthrough in finding out my Creatine kinase levels were high. At the beginning of August I received a preliminary diagnoses of having polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). I was started on low levels of prednisone, that is helping, but that was wrecking havoc with the other maintenance meds I was taking, until we got that adjusted it was a bit of a rough go for me. That, coupled with a first anniversary of a traumatic experience I had back on August 14, 2008 sent me over the edge, and I shutdown for the last two weeks.

In the interim I have also been to the Dentist to extract a broken tooth, and a neurologist for a sleep study, because of my circadian rhythm being off from working nights for the last 32 years, and then retiring, and joining the ranks of “day people” My next Doctors visit will be on the 14th of September to a Rheumatologist to verify/clarify the PMR diagnoses.

I would like to now take the time, to personally thank Ben, Shelly, and Deb for their kindness and understanding during a difficult time in my life.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm making Ham and garden green beans for dinner.
The Ham's roasting on the barby, and the beans and potatoes are from my good neighbor Casey.

so when you winter them you keep'm in a greenhouse right? or do you not get snow like i do?We have a small sun porch. We have this unique micro-climate here in Central Pa. When repotting a plant.. should you use 100% new soil or should you leave the large ammount that sticks to the roots....I've always tried to disturb the root system as little as possible, so I leave whatever comes along.

Knowing. That if your plant is "root bound" one may have to make adjustments in the size of the new pot, carefully relax, and untangle the roots, and if the plant is suffering from nematodes, they will have to be trimmed.
If you know your compost/soil is disease free it is perfectly fine to use that.

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), September 4th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XVII:

That chance for showers I talked 'bout last week, ended up makin' for a dreary Friday into Saturday morning, but since then, sunny all week with temps in the upper 70's to low 80's. Lows in the mid to lower 50's, we made our first below on 50 reading August 31st at BBX. 47°.

Officially at KCXY it dropped to 55 KCXY is 9miles away, and 100' closer to sea-level.

Rainfall for the week at BBX 0.93” ~ KCXY 1.27”
Next slight chance of rain 10% Wednesday into Thursday

BB's getting his second wind, and is starting to produce flowers again, not sure how I'm going to tell the DW 'bout bringing BB indoors. Still have 'bout 16 toms on him.

Anak still doin' real well, fruit is getting larger and he has a nice deep tom green color. Just found a larger pot to transplant Anak, so he'll be moving today.

I have one of my projects next to Anak (see pix). I want eddie to drop one of these off to all my friends houses on his Christmas Eve route, but eddie sez he doesn't want to be held liable for the broken glass... Hey eddie!...How ya coming with the little parachutes?.... He's over there at the work bench mumbling something... eddie is that your I.Q.?

Lucked into havin' two lawn tractors giving to me, these past weeks. Will have the craftsman 18h 42cut for keeps, I'll sell the Amftrac 1414 14h 42cut maybe next year. Getting' that time of the year here, be soon thinking 'bout puttin' the plow on the craftsman, do have some grading to try it out on in case it doesn't snow.. The craft's a step up from my Toro 12h 38cut, shaved an hour off my mow time, and the yard almost looks like a golf green.

That vertical frame is the 14 when it was in tear-down, clean-up, re-paint mode, its 'bout half re-built. Hope to have pix next week.

Missed on getting pix of a fawn and its mother feeding this morning, maybe later in the week... Stay tuned!

Health is hangin' in there, but my sleep took a beatin' in the last several days, still getting' 'bout 6 to 7 hrs. a night, but it backed-up to 9-10pm to 4am, all edt times.

Have a happy and safe Labor Day in America, Independence Day in Brazil, and Victory Day in Mozambique.

It is sculptured and where he tends to water "A lot" to get that 'grass growing' I have dug up to replace with other plants that I can move around. I can't do it when he is home because he feels he needs to help and he can't. I try to do major and minor changes when he is gone, he is happy with the results and doesn't feel bad about not contributing in the work.

Well, that was just beautiful!:) Ignore Tick, I hear she really doesn't like the gamey meat and she is no where near you:eek: *looks around wildly*

The only time I get to see deer is when I'm in Oregon and the come to feed on Judys plants, but they are so beautiful. I used to see them a lot in Illinois and had to watch out for them in my car (well, they weren't actually in my car, I watched while 'I' was in my car.)

My Mom (in Ill. Has hit one and lucky that she came out OK) car of course and poor deer were not.

I'm intriged about the albino, I bet that is a sight to see

Beautiful pics, all of them!

I've been cooking up tomato stuff, because I love tomatoes and I'm going to post what I did in the recipes from the garden.

My front yard is looking great as far as I'm concerned, but my 26 year old son didn't notice a difference:eek: Three days work! I'm disowning him

Picking up DH from the airport Tuesday, maybe he won't notice either.

I'm thinking about cutting back some tom plants soon! We have lots of growing time left and I need tomatoes!

I'm having a great relaxing Labor Day, just opened a nice bottle of Chardonnay and am reading a book my G-D Daughter gave me (she's 10)
Harry Potter and I love it. Never read anything like it before, but I love reading. The weather has been great, 80's!! :D

If neighbor Harry (that feeds 'em) saw that post he'd have a few choice words. Ya otta' hear him 'bout the people that stop at night and spot. (for one, it's illegal nowadays in Pa.)

They're just 'bout ready to show up... It's a half hour before Sundown here. 7:40pm edt.

In all my years of drivin' (42) I've missed 8 of 'em... Knock on wood...

The albino is 6years old now, yada thought there was a ghost running through the pasture, but now she's 85% brown, her eyes are darkening up, and she has one 4point antler.

Thank You, 'bout the pix.

Your son didn't help? Does he have the same affliction your DH has 'bout gardening?

If DH doesn't notice, have a nice big dinner waiting for him. He'll think he forgot your anniversary.

Yea, its getting to be that time of year again. We have a couple of months left... Trouble is, we'll have first frost, then it'll get warm again.

Nothing wrong with reading... Its the gateway to the Universe...

Oh come on, my dear. But I must say that during one of my incarnations I spent a lot of time, a long long time ago in Northern Ontario where about the only meat on your table was either venison, wild turkey, duck, etc. that had their demise by no other means then shooting. If one had qualms about killing a deer they didn't eat well. Deer have to be kulled from time to time anyway.

I have never seen a bird eat a Monarch, which butterfly is encouraged in my garden with various Monarch edibles, stocking up for their short flight to Presquille Point before their long voyage to the Amazon.

I hope you weren't too offended by my attempt at humour. I didn't know I was that scary, but Dahlia did see through me and understood I was only pulling your leg.

If one had qualms about killing a deer they didn't eat well. Deer have to be kulled from time to time anyway.I was brought up in a family of hunters, trappers, and fishermen . We all enjoyed the hunt for small, large game, trout, bass, shad, and mostly tuna.

We were leaving for camp the day Ruby shot Oswald.

We did all our own cleaning, skinning, and butchering of any game we brought home.
Between my Dad, and my three brothers it was very rare that we did not eat bear, elk, moose, antelope, ram, venison, pheasant, turkey, grouse, rabbit, squirrel, groundhog, and fish over the winter.

And we used every part of the animal. After the hide was tanned/treated, me mostly, made wall hangings or floor rugs, mounted racks, hats, gloves, mocs, and purses for Christmas gifts. The intestines of the animal were used to make sausage out of the lesser cuts of meat of that animal.
You're the adventurous type, have you ever had brains, mountain oysters, tongue, kidneys, liver, stuffed maw from your deer?

My point is, I Have No Qualms

I have never seen a bird eat a Monarch, which butterfly is encouraged in my garden with various Monarch edibles, stocking up for their short flight to Presquille Point before their long voyage to the Amazon.
oh come on, my dear.Now it is I that seems to have offended you.
I am surprised, you did not mention that Monarchs are poisonous to birds, because of the Monarchs appetite for milkweed. That is why birds have learned not to attack them. Monarch (butterfly) - Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_(butterfly))

I hope you weren't too offended by my attempt at humour. I didn't know I was that scary, but Dahlia did see through me and understood I was only pulling your leg. TickNo, more like taken aback, although we are casual forum friends, I don't know you as well as JD. So I gave you an honest answer to your response to my pix's. The deer would be tasty living on corn, apples, and neighbor Harry's deer food instead of just acorns, and browse. I even gave you the size, and gender of the herd so you wouldn't run out of bullets.

Likewise, I gave JD an honest answer when she rebuffed your attempt at humor “I really wasn't sure”. Harry used to hunt when he was younger, (he's 84) and he was damn good at it! but now he just likes them to visit so he can observe them, and I respect that.

Next time I”ll just ream you out, okay?

I was taught never to waste an animal. So was I, “waste not, want not”

My mom always liked the brains, the testicles I have no taste for but others did, etc. I have never used the intestines though for sausage, imagine that is quite nice. We always thought, they're right there might as well use them. As a general rule, the larger the animal the tougher they were, pig is the standard, and it's a little hard to make sausage out of any gut smaller than them.
Nowadays, the cheaper store brands use a collagen casing made from cow skin. If it's really hard to chew through, and you'd rather cut it away, its probably cellophane or even plastic :eek:

Hi! Everyone, today's nftb is going to be a little different :(

News from the Bucket (nftb), September 11th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XVIII:

Tuesday, September 11th, 2001

8:45 a.m. (all times are EDT): A hijacked passenger jet, American Airlines Flight 11 out of Boston, Massachusetts, crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center, tearing a gaping hole in the building and setting it afire.

I had already been up for several hours, the day started cool and was forecast to go into the 70's. I had already cut the yard, and was trimming when I stopped to go in for a drink of water.

It was 8:55am, DW was getting ready to go off to work, the TV was on Fox News, we were chatting, and my ear caught something about a building in NYC being hit by a plane. I was watching, and listening when I watched, stunned...

9:03 a.m.: A second hijacked airliner, United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston, crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center and explodes. Both buildings are burning.

http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/11/chronology.attack/custom.2nd.plane.jpg

40minutes later Flight77 hit the Pentagon, 27minutes after that Flight93 crashed in Somerset County in my home State of Pennsylvania about a 3hour drive from me.

I gave my DW, all my love, a kiss, and a hug that I didn't want to end when she left for work, I went back out to finish up around the yard, but I didn't feel the same as I did earlier.

Talked with neighbor Harry, that's when I found out about the Pentagon.
I checked my tom, and pepper plants, brought the ripe one's in, and called it a day.

All I ask is, if you can find it within yourself, it doesn't have to be right now, but take the time to give thanks, you may have a little, you may have a lot, it really doesn't matter, just appreciate what you have.

BB, and Anak are doing just fine, that reminds me, I have to go out an lower my flag to half mast...

Howdy! Fellow AMHDer's

After I posted Friday's early morning edition of NFTB, I went to bed thinking I was going to go out to the yard, and finally get started on trimming those Juniper's.

This has been a project I have been dreading for the last few years. With my old work schedule it never seemed I could get to trimming them right, sometimes it was all I could do to keep up with the mowin'.

I planted five of these “prickly” Junipers along the driveway 'bout 20years ago to use as a living snow-fence, and other than some basic trimming to keep them outa' the driveway every few years or so, I left them grow, especially up.

Well... I got up 'bout 9am to the sound of rain pelting the window, took a peek out, and in the words of a fellow member it was “piss pourin' rain”, by the time it was all over Saturday evening BBX had picked up 2.12” ~ KCXY had 2.21”.
The day turned into indoor chores with some electrical, and plumbing work, but that's for the home appliances, and plumbing forums.

This morning dawned bright, and sunny, and after makin' breakfast, I headed out to work on the Junipers, thinkin' 'bout something my Dad said once.
I may have related this story 'bout my Dad on one of the earlier pages of UDT, but I could hear him sayin':

“The only thing we did on a Sunday, on the farm was feed an care for the animals, and have Sunday dinner.”

Well... Times have changed, and as long as I'm not makin' a lot of noise, and it's between noon, and four I''ll try to get things done. I still will not cut grass on a Sunday.

So anyhow... I had already started on the front one last week, and I achieved my objective of toppin', and trimmin' at least two more.
The way I laid it out, there are three, then a pathway, then the last two.
I put the shortcut in so I didn't have to walk 'round the ends to get to the yard.

I started a little early 'bout 11:30, and was done with the trimmer, loppers, an saw by 4. Still took till 5:30 to load all the trimmins' in the truck. Only two more to go. See pix.
The second pix shows a wooden perimeter that I use to, an will again use for my garden. Watch out JD!

On the right is a red maple bush that I have to move, on the left end is an elderberry bush.
Then the last two Junipers that need topped, an trimmed.
That white line in the pix is a sight line I put up to help me judge the height.
BB and Anak are there in the left background.

The Township where the DW, an me live, has this program where, You can dump off your yard trimmins', and then load up on the compost they make of it.
If it's there this Saturday, Ill take some pix of the chipper/shredder, and rows of compost.
If you want more than you can load, they have a deal where they'll deliver up to 9cu.yds. For 25bucks.

I'm off now to have a snack... Some of BB's toms, with onions all diced up, over cottage cheese, oh, an don't forget the pepper.

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

Nice pics, according to your white line, it looks like you are cutting them in half, but I don't see as well as I used to. I like the idea of the compost thing, we don't have that around here and I have no place at all to even have a small compost pile. I used to have one, but it got out of hand and I decided to build a much needed shed in it's place when DH was out of town.:)

I was checking out my Hybrid 2 days ago (which is not doing so great) and noticed a foot tall tomato plant growing where my "Yellow Pear" was last year! It's very close to my 'Disney Rose' but I think I might be getting some 'Yellow Pear Tomatoes' if the weather holds up.

I cut off a clipping from my Dahlia (actually it broke) and put it in water and it is looking at this point a lot like BB's baby, so I cut off a clipping from one of my better toms and put it in water also. We will see what happens:rolleyes:

Hope everything went good today:)

Nice pics, according to your white line, it looks like you are cutting them in half, but I don't see as well as I used to. Maybe I'm anal (we all have our own set of peculiarities, don't we?), but I wanted to keep the same level as the arborvitae in the front yard.
So I just took a rough measurement, the arborvitae came up to my eyes, walked over to the Junipers, gauged the height, an strung my line. See pix... The bushes start higher in the front, then get lower towards the back. It's never a good idea to cut more than 2/3rds at one time . It helps to minimize the shock to the bush, but I like to experiment so I'll keep an eye on them.

I 'll have to do some research, the third pix shows (I think) an Africanized Honey Bee. The fourth pix is of a an africanized bee.

I like the idea of the compost thing, we don't have that around here and I have no place at all to even have a small compost pile. I used to have one, but it got out of hand and I decided to build a much needed shed in it's place when DH was out of town.:) Yes the trade off between trimmins' an compost works out quite well, though with the compost taking longer to produce, there are times when the Twp. Runs out... :(
You sure get a lot done when DH is out of town... Does he ever wonder 'bout your secret helper? :rolleyes:

I was checking out my Hybrid 2 days ago (which is not doing so great) and noticed a foot tall tomato plant growing where my "Yellow Pear" was last year! it's very close to my 'Disney Rose' but I think I might be getting some 'Yellow Pear Tomatoes' if the weather holds up. I thought you had a “Mediterranean climate” if its close to that, it should be okay or bring it indoors if you have the room. Does it snow where you are?

I cut off a clipping from my Dahlia (actually it broke) and put it in water and it is looking at this point a lot like BB's baby, so I cut off a clipping from one of my better toms and put it in water also. We will see what happens:rolleyes:What I noticed from my impatiens cuttings was the roots started growing from the nodes on the stem where the leaves would normally form. Roots should start as early as the first week, mine took two.

For Anak the stem developed white nodules on the stem, an then the roots formed out of the nodules. Roots should start as early as the first week, Anak took 3½

Make sure any cuttings your trying to root get plenty of light, even 24/7, tap water's okay, but some like to let it sit for a day to allow the chlorine to dissipate.

Once you see roots up an down the stem, its okay to plant in soil. Keep 'em moist, but not wet, for a couple of weeks, then slow down to just before dry, before you add water.
Don't fertilize while trying to root in the water, once in the soil after those couple of weeks start with a weak solution, when you see the plant take off, then you can use a stronger solution of fert, every other week or so.

Hope everything went good today:)Actually it did. I guess you could say it was an “extended visit”, from 1:30pm to 4:05pm, but he had a large list of questions to ask, did a physical exam, took blood an urine samples, and I'm going for X-Rays later 'round 1pm.
Because I recently (in the past year) developed a scalp psoriasis, the samples for testing are more specific to a type of arthritis called “Psoriatic Arthritis” that resembles rheumatoid arthritis. But I won't know for sure until all the tests come back in about a week. My next visit isn't until Nov. 19th that's when I feel the Dr. will put me on a regular maintenance med schedule... But once he knows what's going on... maybe I can push for a quicker solution over the phone.

So far the prednisone is working, and I'm back to 7 – 8hours of sleep a night.
Before the prednisone, that Juniper job would have wiped me out till Thursday or Friday.
He's givin' me Sulindac (an nsaid) 200mg Tab Myl, to take twice a day instead of the acetaminophen.

It's funny, Nov. 19th will be a year since I retired, the Lord works in mysterious ways...

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), September18th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XIX ~ Part One of Three:

I don't know 'bout the rest of you, but for me it always seems that the Fall season will sneak up on me.

Living here on the 41st Latitude the Winter doldrums give way to Spring, and Summer, and when your finally dialed in to working outside till 9 or 9:30pm with daylight you slide into September, and lose 'bout 3hours... Oh well, that's the way the world turns, no matter how hard Homo Sapiens (HS) tries to “fool” Mother Nature, HS always comes out on the short end of the stick.

Me... I try to be like the weather, and follow the path of least resistance...

A brief history of time:
A Walk Through Time (http://physics.nist.gov/GenInt/Time/time.html)

Rainfall for the week at BBX 2.36” ~ KCXY 2.47”. That includes the over two inch deluge we received last Friday.

Next, chance of rain 40%, Monday into Tuesday.
Temps averaged 67°F ~ 19.4°C for the week, with a forecast average to go to 75°F ~ 23.8°C for next week.

Because of the loss of daylight, and lower temps BB hasn't been doing to well. Wednesday I had to trim off a branch with two toms on it that had Bacterial canker on them. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_80cGISOzOds/SrLgwKBACEI/AAAAAAAAAoE/1hTRVXcMod0/s800/100_1501.JPG
So far I've found the problem at two other locations on him. If it gets out of hand I may just decide to cut my losses, and put BB to rest.

This image shows three problems. Canker, concentric/radial cracking from inconsistent watering/weather, and insect damage (the small hole, lower left center) this allows for further bacterial, and fungal damage. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_80cGISOzOds/SrOUgk0dZCI/AAAAAAAAApk/VvfyUl1suvs/s800/100_1510.JPG

The left pix shows what's left of the compost. The pile on the right was a better pile.
You see those yellow lined rectangles, there's three of them there.

The piles would stretch from there all the way back to the dump pile, near the center of the next pix. I'm guessin' 150yds. At least.

I don't see the yellow lined rectangles, but that's OK, I get the jist of it all. I think I'm going to get a good sized bucket and start composting with just my veggie scraps, that's really all I have room for.

My toms are still doing good and some of them haven't changed much. I need to cut back a couple to see what happens, but haven't made my way back to that part of the yard with my clippers yet, something closer keeps stopping me. (and I don't mean the pool)

Those bees looked like normal bees to me, what difference is there? Or is it something I wouldn't be able to notice. The sad part is I've been looking at all my bees really close and still they all look the same, except for the monster black ones.

We don't get snow, but possibly frost, sometimes hard. The weather is always making me scratch my head, it used to always be the same up until about 10 years ago and now it's a free for all. It's going to be in the 100's this week, we will still be swimming in October, which is odd.

I need to find some Lilacs to plant. I know of some about 5 miles away and they seem to be growing great.:)

Dahlia, you could do vermiculcture in a bucket, that is worms and a bit of good soil and then start feeding your veggie scraps in.

Condo dwellers, apartment dwellers who are diehard gardeners in their balconies use vermiculture to augment their balcony gardens. Everything is kept in a bucket under the sink. Not as gross as it sounds, worms are very clean in their environment and can reduce veggie scraps in no time at all to 'gardeners gold'. With the cost of produce skyrocketing around here, vermiculture has caught on in popularity again.

But if you have to do this outside, your climate sounds moderate, worms are quite warm in a bucket of dirt and can stand a bit of frost.

Here is a website on vermiculture: earth911.com/blog/2007/04/02/composting-with-worms (sorry, you will have to cut and paste)

Hi! JD, Hi! Tick

(and I don't mean the pool) Yes, the lines are a little hard to see.

Here's a site that you can check Top 10 Sites about Composting | Xmarks (http://www.xmarks.com/topic/composting) It has a couple a pages on composting sites, there maybe some ideas there for you.

I've made a decision to close out my gardening for the year, and start getting ready for next year. With the lowering of the Max (74)/Min (55) average (65) temps, BB's been on sick call for the last several weeks.

The yellow squash came down with dusty mildew. The peppers have bacterial spot, although I may try to save the one, but our flowers are still doing well... Until our first hard freeze...

I have Anak transplanted into a larger container that should hold him over the winter.
And I have to get working on the old-new garden... Hmmm... :rolleyes:... what to name it?

Those bees looked like normal bees to me, what difference is there? or is it something I wouldn't be able to notice. The sad part is I've been looking at all my bees really close and still they all look the same, except for the monster black ones.I looked around, and found out that there are 20 Identification Keys in order to tell the difference between the two. The only definitive way is to perform a DNA test on the bee's that you have.

OK, I'm going with the metal garbage can with the holes buried half way technique and if I can find room off in a corner big enough, I'll go with 2. They say the worms will find their own way in there.

Hi Dahl, your vermiculture will go a lot faster if you buy some worms; they don't have to be special worms, as they say, Buy some fishing worms. It is going to take forever for these little guys to find your garbage cans. Two garbage cans sounds good. Don't put them in the sun though. You don't want worms to cook doing their composting job.

I have composted normally without worms before and never had a problem. The site I was looking at gave all sorts of trouble shooting if your worms are dying. I really don't like to kill anything, I feel bad. When I'm digging and come across worms, I always throw them some where, so they don't dry up. I actually say out loud "oh, sorry" if I chop one in half. I know it doesn't hurt them, I'm just weird.

I also don't like the idea on moving the stuff around to get to the worm free stuff. I think I would become pissy and just scoop everything that I want out including the worms and then have to go buy more.

Maybe if I find a place that sells worms, I will start with a pound and see what happens, I really like the idea, but I don't know. It's a new thing.

I've got the spot and it's the most shady place I could find, I've been watering it for a while, so I can dig tomorrow.

Only one can! The 20 gallon I bought was $14.00 and I had to go to 3 stores to find it!:eek:

:eek::eek: I would bauk at $l4. Too ! One can enough. I don't like worms either but can handle them and they are so good for the soil, they renew and aerate all our gardens and don't take anything. They are little souls, think of it that way! Why don't you just start digging them up, if you put on gloves you won't feel them.

When you find worms in your garden, bless them and find a new home for them by digging up a spadeful and putting them in.

You are very brave, Dahl. :cool:

Good luck. Too bad I can't send you some Canuck worms. They know how to ski, cross country, live in igloos and have huskies ;)( Now don't tell me anyone thinks Im serious okay.), but Canadian worms are very talented.

Hi! Everyone :)
News from the Bucket (nftb), September 26th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XX Part one of two:

My apologies on being late with this weeks nftb, I've been pretty busy...

Rainfall for the week at BBX 0.10” ~ KCXY 0.08”.
Next, chance of rain 100%, Today into Sunday afternoon. Possible 2.25”

High temps averaged 68°F ~ 20°C for the week, with a forecast average to go to 66°F ~ 18.8°C for next week. Lows 50°F ~ 10°C.

Early in the week I was down at neighbor Harry's, he had a Wind Turbine installed

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_80cGISOzOds/Sr4n_izdDQI/AAAAAAAAAzU/lXUCtF0J3j4/s400/100_1597_1.JPG

And I'm putting a pictorial together for him, and his DW. I plan on uploading them to my web site, the page will be called “Alternative Energy”. That's him sitting by the corner of the house. I'll give you a high sign when it happens.

Thursday, I “think” I finished with trimmin' the trees, and shrubs 'round the property for this year. Yes, I have another load to go to the Twp. Dump.

Yesterday, after I mowed the lawn, eddie, and me had a quiet service, and laid BB to rest.

Sadness to see the end of the project, and the demise of one of God's creations, but happiness in all the fond memories that BB help create.

This pix shows the soil conditions:

I think my original question, will the roots grow up or down? Has been answered.
They will grow up, but because of the hard pack present in the soil they had a hard time getting very far.

End of part one...

Speaking of Stringer's...

One other item, for those of you that know Chery (relationship expert), but don't know she's in a bit of a bad way, and you would like to be included in a get well card that Stringer has proposed, see here; askmehelpdesk.com/other-family-people/chery-hospital (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/other-family-people/chery-hospital-398298.html)

Hi! Everyone :)

News from the Bucket (nftb), October 16th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XXIII:

Been a cold rain the last couple'a days, with temps in the upper 30's F ~ -1.1C. Average departure from normal -6.5°F ~ -21.4°C….. Brrrrr...

Rainfall for the week since 06:56edt Thursday morn, BBX 1.87” ~ KCXY 1.07”, presently lite drizzle, with a forecast of 2.25” by Sundown Sunday, highs to remain in the upper 30's lows to mid to lower 30's.

Yard and garden work has slowed considerably, with the emphasis on winterizing the few remaining outdoor plants.

I'm waiting for the weather to break so I can cut the lawn for the final time this season, then I have to get the tractor ready for winter, mainly swappin' out the mower deck (md) for the snow blade (sb), putting on the chains, and giving the tractor a winter tune-up.

I see binx44 stopped in for a visit. She's been pretty busy lately with her Forestry studies at University. She told me that last week she cut her first tree down, musta' been a big one because she sounded excited in relating the story to me.
She's doing well, and is busier than a one armed Logger with indoor and outdoor studies.

If any of you have seen my post # 22 in Just Dahlia's thread askmehelpdesk /gardening-plants/what-are-you-doing-to-prepare-for-next-season? (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/gardening-plants/what-you-doing-prepare-next-season-399861-3.html)

I'll be using the sb to grade the soil I commandeered :D from my neighbor Harry's windmill project. Its not the best tool for grading, but it still beats raking, and shoveling all of it. I'll see if I can post some pix in JD's thread.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80cGISOzOds/Sth_2B3vNbI/AAAAAAAABCk/rtQl0n9oIDA/s400/100_1656.JPG

As you can see I had the majority of the soil dumped down near the wetlands, with a load closer to the driveway. With the recent rains it will be a lot harder to work the soil to where I'd like it :(

Well I got to go an get busy now, I'm swappin' out the door screens for storm windows, an there's one that I have to replace the screen... Ops! There's the Dw's alarm... gonna' help get her off to work to!

Eddie! There any coffee left?. Yea, just made a fresh pot!

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

News from the Bucket (nftb), October 25th, 2009 ~ Vol. I ~ Edition XXIV:

Yesterday morning I was out in the yard at 7am edt, and the temp was 67°F ~ 19.4°C. Quite a change when just last week at the same time it bottomed out at 36°F ~ 2.2°C. The wide variations in weather are to be expected though, during the Fall, and Spring.

We were on the fringe of a 2% watch area for tornadoes, and there were a few radar signatures, but no sightings, and winds only gusted to 33mph ~ 53.1Kph.
This system that just went through postponed the MLB World Series in New York by a day, 7th game to be held on Monday if...

Rainfall for the week BBX 3.87” ~ KCXY 2.07” presently Overcast 50°F ~ 10°C
This weeks forecast, highs to the mid 60's lows to mid to lower 40's.

Speaking of Fall. Don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour this Sunday morning at 2am. You wouldn't want to be late for church, now would you? ;)

Spring ahead, Fall back. For the Lands down under it'd be,. the same I reckon... :confused: eddie get a hold of shaz, and check that out....I'm on it.

The yard, and garden are pretty much settled in for Winter. Going to try Solarizing the garden this year. It is an effective way to kill or suppress many fungi, nematodes, bacteria, weeds, and insects 57 Ways - 15. Solarize Soil (http://www.thisland.illinois.edu/57ways/57ways_15.html)

Gave the lawn its final cut of the season, and will be swappin' out the mower deck for the snow blade.

Have the Hibiscus, Mandavilla, and rose bush under cover/burlap, although, since this warm weather hit I uncovered the rose for a while, because I was concerned 'bout mold/mildew starting at its base, and felt it would be better if the air could circulate.

Still savin' seeds from this years flowers. The cuttings I made from our impatiens have already rooted, and the parent plants have taken to their new homes.
And, Anak BB is well, and has started setting fruit.

Update:
I'm going to shift the nftb newsletter from its usual time on Fridays to Sundays.
Sundays are quieter for me, and it allows me to reflect better on the previous weeks happenings.

Hello to all the UDT thread followers. There's so many posts once I saw the tomatoes coming I decided to call the experiment a success. I have a question about a possible advantage of havint the growing, tender part of the plant on the bottom. I've noticed that the Tomato Horn Worm attacks at the top of the plant. I wonder if they'd be less likely to find the tender growth of UDTs? Any observations about this??

Hi! Sundial, welcome to AMHD :) Hi! JD, I'm still under the weather a bit, but hangin' in there.

Now to answer Sundials Thesis...

Any observations about this???

The tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata).

LIFE CYCLE... Borrowed from;Tomato Hornworms in Home Gardens (http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/M1224.html)
Moths emerge from overwintering sites in spring. After mating, females deposit oval, smooth, light green eggs singly on lower and upper leaf surfaces. Caterpillars hatch, begin to feed and are full grown in three to four weeks. The mature caterpillars drop off plants and burrow into the soil to pupate.
Moths emerge in two weeks to begin a second generation, during mid summer. Second generation moths deposit eggs on host plants, such as tomato. The caterpillars feed until late summer or early fall and then pupate. The pupae remain in the soil through the winter.

Most moths, will overwinter in the ground, and when the temperature of the ground rises, the metamorphosed pupae (new moths) have a propensity to fly into an updraft, that in turn creates lift. This raises them to the tops of the plants they are looking for, by smell.
Once they find their tender feast the destruction begins.

In this link it discusses Upwind Flight and Reproductive Physiology:
Behavioral responses of adult female tobacco hornworms, Manduca sexta, to hostplant volatiles change with age and mating status (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC355905/)
At the top of the page where it says "abstract" in the green bar, go to the right where it says other sections and click for the drop-box and pick discussions.
In that section it talks 'bout upwind flight an reproduction.

So in a nutshell I would say that growing their source of food in an area that they aren't accustom to searching, would offer some protection.

But don't forget, they use odor's too...

olfactory cues provide information about biologically relevant resources such as food, mates, and oviposition sites

As with JD I didn't have any myself this year.
I hope that helps guide you.

Hi! Everyone :)
News from the Bucket (nftb), Saturday February 6th, 2010 ~ Vol. II ~ Edition I:

Yes it has been a while since I last posted nftb (Post #406 page 41 October 25th, 2009)

I had cervical, and lumbar problems that needed addressed, and I pretty much shutdown all internet activities. I'm now in physical therapy three times a week, and my prognosis looks good. So far I'm able to stay away from having surgery.

With that, and Winter slowing things down I had to get my house in order. I hope you understand. I did ask eddie if he would like to keep things going, but he declined... Somthin' 'bout “durn computers”

Okay!

Good thing Winter was coming, and the yard, and garden was in hibernation not too much to tell there, just routine maintenance.
It was a pretty normal Winter here in the Harrisburg, Pa. area with only 15” of snow... Up until today...

Since last weekend the forecaster's were calling for a big snow to hit this weekend... Well, yesterday it started at 2:50pm est (7:50pm UTC) and this morning 17hours later at 8am we had 18”. It's supposed to stop around 4pm this afternoon :eek:

Here are before
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_80cGISOzOds/S2yNrdIZlxI/AAAAAAAABgc/dofPTKQBC7A/s800/100_1733.JPG

And 8am pix:

Don't forget your pets!

When I was out at 8, I saw that our faithful feline (Candy Pester) had a hankerin' to go out also (Bathroom break), but when I pushed open the door and she saw how deep it was She wanted no parts of it. Eventually, after I made a path out to her “usual” area she did come out and was able to relieve herself.

She pretty reliable 'bout those matters, but you haveta be careful. If your pet holds tooo long they can end up with a bladder infection or worse. :(

You should have seen it you would have laughed. I wish I had the camera. Candy was spookin' around after she did her business, and I just happened to scrape the snow shovel on the concrete.

Well... She really spooked, didn't know where to hide, so she did a flyin' leap out into the fresh snow in the driveway, and immediately disappeared, all you saw in the hole she made was her hiner stickin' up just under the top of the snow. LMAO :p

She rouched around, and all I saw was her snow covered face peakin' out of the hole, jumped out and acted like nothing happened...

What's that eddie?. Oh well, eddie tells me the grader just came through, and the snow is now waist deep in front of the driveway, I guess I'd better get out there, I'll post some more pix when I get back.

Well, JD that 6 to 12 I mentioned earlier turned out to be 14".
I was able to take 24 pix's with 'bout a half dozen of me snowblowin' taken by my DW
(behind every good man, there's a great woman, right? ;)), but there's one problem...

They total 6.5MB, and I don't think the admins would take kindly of me posting that amount. :rolleyes:
That's with even knockin' them back to 640x480 rez.

I also made a slide show with music, and that comes to 25MB, so I'm at a loss as to what to do.
I've been trying to upload the Show to my picasa web album, but it hangs part way there. :confused:

I'm picking Daffodils:oYes, everyone's okay, DW had off work today (her work was closed).

I forgot to mention, that's not fog in the new pix that's horizontal snow.

Daffydills, I'm jealous, I was watchin' some Daytona500 practice... Sunny and cool, yea, I'd wish it was in the mid 50's.

They are callin' for a freeze warning there tonight though. There goes the price of Citrus!

I'm used to that amount of snow occurring here.. At the college the rule for using snow shoes is when the snow hits 2 - 3 feet its manditory. But mind you I live in a place where snow is the norm. even if its spring.. We had snow on halloween one year. That's the end of October :O I've missed you all. A lot of things have changed. Any plans for more experiments this year? I won't have room for a garden at my new place (I'm moving on the 24th back out of Calgary AB and into Fredericton NB) Me and my new boyfriend (been together for around 6 months now) have gotten a 1 bedroom apartment for a decent price and are getting our internet and electricity hooked up at the end of this week. Living out of residence at the college will drop my tuition by almost 6000 dollars. And he's got a good paying job with J D Irving. How have you all been and how has winter been treating you both

Binny, great to see you again. I am so glad life is moving along so successfully for you. I have been pretty busy with my job, renovating a bit, etc. My son is back with me so he is a wonderful help to me and just takes over everything !

Give us up dates on you progress.

If you feed him right, he might just end up being the president of the company some day. ;)

I know I'm the only one who cares, but out of the 14 plants I have... I have a couple of tomatoes blooming and I am really proud and can't wait to eat them. We have been having cold weather:eek: So it might be a while before I can pick and eat and can. :D

I've canned marinara and cocktail sauce so far.:) and of course ate plenty! They are all coming to fruit at different times, which is just fine for me.:D
