Hi, not all the icons in the systray of my Dell laptop will appear on bootup. Only about 5-7 will show up. I do not have "hide inactive icons" checked in the taskbar and start menu settings either.

I have googled this problem and have not found a permanent answer. I did find one tip that suggested logging off as a user and then logging back on again, and that works to bring them all back. But when I boot up again, they fail to all appear again.

I have a relatively new clean installation of XP Home SP2 running. It is less than a week old. All the icons showed up when I first installed the system. But in the last day or two, I noticed the disappearing icons.

I had XP Pro running on another laptop for a few years and never had this problem.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks in advance.

Never mind. Did a little more research and found the answer here: »www.michna.com/kb/WxSystray.htm

To fix it I simply unchecked "UPnP User Interface" under networking components via the add/remove programs in control panel. That totally fixed the problem.

Apparently on some installations, the boot sequence gets overloaded, often after installing new apps that put icons in the systray. This causes some of the other icons not to load. That web page doesn't give a reason why UPnP causes the problem, but it does.

What bugs me is that this has been a long-time problem with Windows and I don't know why Microsoft hasn't fixed it by now.
