TEASPOON??

Nanny-statism at it's best!

Asda clamps down on killer teaspoons • The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/11/asda_teaspoons/)

Are you under 18 years of age? Do have have an urgent need for teaspoons? Well, avoid Asda's Halifax tentacle where the powers that be are determined to prevent this potentially-lethal item of cutlery falling into the hands of murderous yoof.

http://regmedia.co.uk/2009/05/11/teaspoon_receipt.jpg
The proof of the clampdown comes from Nanny Knows Best (http://nannyknowsbest.blogspot.com/2009/04/dangers-of-teaspoons.html) - a site "dedicated to exposing, and resisting, the all pervasive nanny state that is corroding the way of life and the freedom of the people of Britain".

According to the background info, the lady shopper in question was told by an Asda assistant that she'd have to prove her age "because someone had murdered someone with a teaspoon, and therefore ID was now required".
Suitably outraged by this "complete and utter ", another Nanny Knows Best reader's wife decided (http://nannyknowsbest.blogspot.com/) to put Tesco to the test - provocatively turning up at the check-out with two latte teaspoons (long-handled, for the record).
Sure enough, "an assistant was required & she was asked for proof of ID".
In fact, Tesco has been battling cutlery-wielding hoodies for some time. Back in 2007, we reported (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/14/cutlery_ban/) that the supermarket monolith had taken steps to prevent violent sink estate gangs from laying into each other with knives and forks. ®

This is a ridiculous law that will do nothing for public safety. Anything can be used as a weapon. Although I agree that things such as spray paint, matches and lighters should not be sold to under 18s, it has little effect, punk kids always find ways to do things that they shoudn't be doing. Young offenders should be treated as adults if they commit crimes, that would help reduce crime.

Does this mean that even common everyday items, such as a pencil, needs to be controlled?

I knew a guy who a few years back went into a local $2 shop, picked up a claw hammer off the shelf and then robbed the store with it...

Totally unrelated but it bought back fond memories of him being dragged off in the police car...

And bear - you have deeply disturebed me now, how do you know how easy it is to kill someone with a teaspoon
Lol :p

Wars and famine and a failing economy mean nothing when there are killer spoons on the loose
