Because I'm far from Social Security, however my father isn't. He just received his first check from the Social Security Office. He asked me if he is able to continue to work, or must he be unemployed to receive Social Security. Question: Can you have both a working income and Social Security checks?

There are guidelines, as to how much money anyone who is collecting Social Security, can make. You should have him call his local SS office, & ask what the maximum amount of money he can earn, while collecting SS.

He may work, if he earns over specific amounts set by the SS administration, he will loose some payments.

But I will be honest most of the seniors I deal with do much better if they stay active either by hobbies, a home business, eBay, or a regular job

Social Security (NOT DISABILITY PROGRAMS) are not a means-tested payment. You will earn your benefit based on the credits earned and your retirement age. However, your income from other sources affect how the SS payment is taxed (Up to 85% is taxable).

If the payments were due to Disability or other programs, income can be a factor.
