I am curious; how long must a piece of music have been around before copywright laws no longer apply? For instance, if one wanted to use a piece written by Beethoven, can it be used without restriction?

Beethoven's works are public domain. Cipyright expirations depend on the country, the type of media and whether someone exists to renew it.
