My 96 Nissan Altima shuts down on me randomly. There does not seem to be a correlation between the engine shutting off and any other factor like speed, weather, rpm, etc.

I have replaced the air filter, distributor cap, wiring, and spark plugs. The problem still persists. Some mechanics are suspecting the distributor itself, but these are the same mechanics who recommended to replace the above and I am reluctant to spend $500 just to see if it works.

Any of you who had the same problem or have any suggestions, please help.

Thank you,

I would replace the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil:
