My husband and I live in Philadelphia. We took in a 12 year old girl whose mother asked us to babysit and never came back. Her mother did not have custody, her grandmother did, but she was in the hospital. Grandmother signed guardianship papers allowing us to enroll her in school. That was 17 months ago and we have since won full primary physical and legal custody. Nobody from her biological family showed us for either the custody master hearing or the court hearing. How do we terminate parental rights and adopt our daughter?

Please say you are not doing this without an attorney?
Adoptions at best are hard

You try and get them to sign over their rights so you can adopt.

1. You get a lawyer. If you already have one, that's terrific!
2. You petition the biological parents to terminate their rights. If they don't want to, you're going to have a fight on your hands--and it may end up that you lose custody of your daughter.
3. You go to court to adopt once the biological parents sign away their rights.

If you don't have a lawyer, you WILL need one for this.

If you DO have a lawyer, I would suggest asking about adoption to your lawyer.
