please would someone be able to help me I have a big computer problem but haven't much of a clue about computers.

It started a couple of weeks ago when my computer would restart for no apparent reason whether on the internet, playing a game or doing anything really. When the computer restarted on its own I would get 'this system has recovered from a serious error' message.

When I looked in the technical info that would be sent to Microsoft it had the following 2 files in it:

C:\windows\minidump\mini080504-01.dmp
C:\docume-1\richar-1\locals-1\temp\wer11.tmpdir00\sysdata.xml

I checked out the application and system errors in event viewer.
Whatever the errors were had an event id of 1003 in the system part of the event viewer and event id 1007 in the application part of the event viewer.

The system error with event id of 1003 has a description as follows:

error code 10000050, parameter 1 dcdb8616, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 f83d9043, parameter4 00000000

The application error with an event id of 1007 has a description saying the following:
windows cannot determine the associated site for this computer(The RPC server is too busy to complete this operation). Group policy processing aborted

Someone told me to switch off auto restart to get a better error message that could show the problem. I did this and the next time the computer restarted I got this message on a blue screen:

Then a few hours after doing this all sorts of things started to go wrong with my computer for no apparent reason.

Firstly, all of a sudden, search and run would not work in the start menu (I click on them and nothing happens) and although I can get to control panel, none of the items inside control panel (such as system etc) are clickable.

So I restarted my computer and had a black screen and an exception message. I restarted my computer again and this time it got to windows. I went on the internet to try and find some help but then got the following message:

Everything just freezed so I had to restart my computer.

Then I found after this restart that not only would control panel, search and run not work in the start menu but also outlook express had changed appearance. It now looks like a .exe file I think, it is a white box with a blue line across the top and when I click on it it says:

The item msimn.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved so this shortcut will no longer work properly
nearest match based on size, date and type:

Do you want to fix this shortcurt to point at this target or do you just want to delete it.

So I can't get in to my outlook express now eithier.

Then system restore has become unclickable in my start menu and I have tried system restore in safe mode loads of times but it always crashes halfway through with the 'this system has recovered from a serious error message'

I have now noticed that when I right click an object not all the options are there such as 'open with' has dissappeared and 'send to' has dissappeared, when I right click my desktop (to look at properties and screen resolution for example) nothing happens also when on the internet all the pages I have open will sometimes close for no reason and my dial up connection appears asking me if I want to disconnect from the internet.

And that is where I am now.

I know it is a lot to ask but I would be really grateful for any help whatsoever because I really don't know what I am doing.
It seems that something is going wrong every second can someone please advise me as to my best course of action?

Go to: http://sarc.com/ Scroll down and click on,"Free Online Virus and Security Check" Write down exactly anything it finds, then return to: http://sarc.com/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for manually removing.

You might have the flash(upgrade) the BIOS. What kind of computer do you have?

I suggest you take your computer to a local computer sales/repair store near you.
They will be able to fix it.
Do NOT "flash" the BIOS; cause if you use the wrong version, the computer will have a more serious problem!

It could be a virus, it could be your ntsf system is corrupt, or a file corrupt.

Well now, the Senior Expert that gave you the answer of take it to a Pc repair place and they will fix it.

Anyone can do that and spend the minimum $75 or it takes to do so, we come to these forums for other answers we can do on our own.

Try the Winxp recovery console, or reinstall your WinXP CD, also update all your programs and download and install all Windows updates.

See if this helps, before you spend money on repair. what a crappy answer senior Expert, :mad:

Anyone can do that and spend the minimum $75 or it takes to do so, we come to these forums for other answers we can do on our own.

That's a little harsh don't you think? I'm going to side with fred on this one.

Computer users come in a variety of levels; if you deal at all with a large number of users you would be aware of this. The original poster stated "haven't much of a clue about computers". I doubt he would be comfortable accessing the XP recover console much less getting the correct flash program and the correct bios file. Sometimes the user reaches the stage where they (a) are no longer comfortable performing the self-fix steps, (b) have spent too much time trying to fix the problem and want the thing fixed and need the use of their PC again in a hurry.

That's why local computer repair businesses exist - it's based on a concept called "opportunity cost".

I like it here (this forum) because it's very civil, let's try to keep it that way.

Hey I have the Same problem my computer restarts for no reason I don't know what it is. I took it to an expert and he says it could be the power supply. I'm Frustrated anybody got ideas?? :mad:

I have been getting the ntfs.sys error, and the blue screen error with my sound card, smwdm.sys, and I get them very often. I have reformatted, bought new parts, downloaded new drivers, I have done virtually anything that I can think would be the problem/solution. If u can help me and nicathug, that'd be great, thanks. (I've tried everyone else's ideas that replied)

Just for your own information, many, many persons have "wrecked" their computers by trying to fix them on their own, using question sites.
I am NOT saying the question sites gave wrong information, I am simply saying that when a person who has no experience except to turn on a computer tries doing things they have no idea about, they can harm the system so badly, that it will not even boot up. This original question is one of those issues that can be harmed even more by a novice.
I have helped many in my local area with these types of problems.
They would have been much, much better off spending the $75 to being with, and learning from what the computer Tech did.
Wendy, you usually give very good answers, but you do not realize that others aren't as good with a computer as you are. You seem to have forgotten that one little very important idea. You can give good answers, but you have no idea what an inexperienced person will do with them!

I noticed that you folks had a nice little debate about "politeness" and who should wrench on their microchips but I still have a question. And if I had needed "take it to the shop" I would have gone to the "Where to get my computer repaired" forum.

Does anyone have anything to say about the actual question that was asked?

Checking for viruses was suggested. Done. BIOS flashing was suggested. Haven't done it but have been all through the BIOS and with dual BIOS don't see the need. Have checked for corrupt files. None reported.

My problem started when I added two slugs of rdram. The trouble is, I have restored the system to the state it was before I added the rdram and the problem is still happening with only the original memory installed.

Be impolite if you want but if you post I'd appreciate some suggestion of help.

I have read that bad memory slots, bad memory or a bad mainboard could do all this but it's not too cheap to start swapping out that stuff.

I have the same problem. The computer sometimes restart with no apparently reasons.

I have already tried to change motherboard, cpu, video card, ram. Also I have reinstalled the operating system from zero (winXP pro v2002). Still have problem. In this last month it seems to freeze when I launch the Firefox browser (not every time I launch it).

At this moment I have an AMD Athlon 900 Mhz CPU installed with 1Gb of Ram and an Asus A7v880 Motherboard.

I've also used different hard disks to see if the problem was the hard drive but with no new result.

Somebody with solutions?

Could be any number of things, although I couldn't disagree with the notion that a repair shop is probably a good idea. For online virus scanner, I recommend http://housecall.trendmicro.com it not only finds many of the virus's that you may encounter but also will clean many of them. In many cases, saving you the trouble of looking for a removal tool.

I could only wish you were in Southwest Nebraska. I have a repair shop located in a decent sized ISP in the area. The average repair is $35.00 (1 hour) and I call if it is going to run over that! Because I also handle much of the technical support and home network advisory for the ISP, I don't have to pad my retirement fund with each repair. Hopefully there is a similar place in your area. If you are with a local ISP you may want to call and see who they recommend. Just a thought...

I hope that by now, you have your computer up and running as it should be. Some problems and issues with computers cannot be fixed, except by a professional; that's their job.
If anyone had an answer that will solve the issue, it would have been given.
If you haven't alread done so, please take it to a repair store.
You asked for opinions, and this is the best advice I can give you.
Most of us don't have months to try fixing a computer. If something happens, how important is "time" without it? That's the important question one must ask themselves.

Ive looked everywhere for a solution on Google with the keyword "random resets" and this is the most detailed site I've found but still no solution...

I have RD ram and my random reset plm started a long time ago... I would be playing warcraft 3 tft and all of a sudden the comp restarted, not knowing what happened I thought nothing of it so when I loged back on it restarted again... again... again... for about 15 more times, then I got a bit frustrated and thought my problem was the new NVIDA graphics card I got. So I took that out and put back in my 128mb ati card and the plm went away.

skip another year and I've been still gaming and the PROBLEM CAME BACK I'm so furious because I can't find out what's wrong... I really don't get it now... it won't let the desktop show anymore, after I click my name to log on the little fag just wants to instantly restart RIGHT WHEN I CLICK, then after rebooting it restarted on the welcome screen, after that it just shows a blank screen which forces me to hold the shutdown button for a hard 5 seconds. Finnaly it let me on then it sends up 20 errors including ati files/system errors/an error saying my system will reboot in X amount of time/errors saying files are missing etc.. So I formatted my hd and I thought all was fine, 20 min. later it all comes back. Looking to my left I see my computer running the memcheck86 program and so far I have a friggin 1210 errors, I really don't see what's going on here but now in the time it I have been writing more crap up there now it says 1360 errors and its buggin the crap out of me... please help!

Sounds like you've found your problem, is the 512mb one stick or two? If two, you can remove either one and test again to find the faulty one. Have you checked eBay for replacement ram?

Well last night I was annoyed that it got to 2k errors so I just slept on the test... then when I woke up tonight and came down I checked the report... it wasn't even done yet and to make that any worse it was at 22000 errors, so I just said screw it! I riped open the case and started fiddling with the rd ram since they can only work in pairs...

Ran the test again and boom! No errors, now I'm on the computer and it hasn't gotten one restart... even better, since I decided to trash the old sticks and replace them with the blue old ones I've gone from 512MB rd ram to 640MB... lifes great! :P thanks for your help guys and I think ill refere this site to other people that are having comp plms because it's a really informational site. Well I have to get back on owning people at wc3 cyas! ;)

Damnit!! Oah my god -.- its back and worse then ever!!
I don't know what it is now... I swaped ram and that's not the problem anymore
I swaped vid cards and that's not the plm
I read voltage on the power supply and still not the plm
Now I get a lovely REGISTRY_ERROR right before I can even log onto windows... I simply hate my computer and I wish to blow it up soon

Is the registry error the first thing to go wrong since last time or just the most recent? If this is the only thing, you can try pressing F8 whilst starting to get to the boot menu, and selecting "Last known good configuration". Of course this won't help if it's hardware, but it uses the previous good copy of the registry.

Have you tried to scan you computer for viruses?

I got a virus update the other day from McAfees telling me about W32/IRCbot.worm it is a virus that you can get by simply going on line. Once infected, your computer may restart continually. I have listed a link to McAfee’s that tells you how to remove it if this is what is wrong. I am technology stupid so this is the best that I can do for you.

This is the best site that I've tried yet.
I also had that problem, my computer used to restart whilst doing any activity.
I tried the memory test, and voilà, no restarts.
