Depending on the state you live in you may or may not have some visitation rights. What were the circumstances that you raised your grand child and not the mother. Why did the maother all of a sudden resume custody?

Did you have legal custody of the child? Were you the guardian of the child? Where is the child's father?

Well there was your big mistake. By not getting legal guardianship or custody of the child, you left yourself wide opn to your daughter just coming and getting the child whenever she wanted.
However, the news is good for you as to NY laws. Domestic Relations Law (DRL) s72 holds that grandparent visitation can be authorized if there is an untoward disruption of an established grandparent-grandchild relationship (see Visitation Rights of Grandparents siblings and others. New York Divorce and Family Law, the definitive site about divorce, child support and custody. (http://www.brandeslaw.com/grandparent_and_nonparent_visit/visitation_rights_grandparents_siblings.htm)). If you can prove that you raised the child for the first 5 years, I think that would qualify. But it means going to court and filing for visitation rights.
What I would do is show the linked article to your daughter. Tell her you do not want to have to drag everyone to court so that you can see your granddaughter. But that you will if she forces you to. But you need to mean it in case she still refuses.
P.S. you need to be patient waiting for answers. Sometimes asnwers come in minutes other times in hours or even days.
