View Full Version : Too much debt and not enough options?

I managed to run up £20,000 of debt by the time I was 18 and 1/2, I was incredibly stupid and irresponsible. But at the time, somehow, the debt didn't matter because I could always pay my payments.

I then on a whim upped and left. I went to Australia with the intention of staying for the year, so I ridded of my rented flat, new car, and every possession I owned apart from what I had in my backpack.

It lasted a month, then I ran out of money and came home. (I'm very aware this was very very silly and I should not have done it) When I got home I had no home or anything.

I moved in with my sister as a temporary thing but I lost track of all my debts, they just kept on growing. I looked in to bankruptcy as I didn't see a way out. Bare in mind I had no home and by this time I hadn't made any payments for about a year.

After 2 years I started paying back my debts, I got a new job (which I still have) and I paid of £7000 in 5 months, but this meant I was still lodging at my sisters, scraping to get through every week. Recent events meant I had to move from where I was so I'm now renting a flat. I don't really have much money now as this is much more expensive than before. But I'm desperate to get this sorted out. I 've looked through hundreds of debt plans but none are suitable.

It needs to be able to include CCJ's and I have a fair amount of personal debt owed to friends etc:

What I really need to do is get one big loan and pay everything, that way I would only pay one thing and the payment would actually be cheaper than the debt plan.

The only problem is...

I have got 0 credit history, defaults for over nearly 3 years, missed payments, CCJ's etc: I can't even get one of those payday loans with no credit check, a bank account or a phone contract. (I figured these were the easiest to obtain)

FYI

I have nothing of value, nobody I know could be a guarentor or help in any way. I need to get his sorted asap so no waiting 3 months for the credit to get better cos I afford to pay for the next month let alone 3.

Any suggestions would be really helpful.

You need to get a second job and put 100% of the money you make there into paying off your debts. Do not use that money for anything else.

You also should think about taking in a room mate. That will cut your living expenses in half. I know it is an inconvenience, but it might be a necessity. It might be beneficial to find someone in a similar financial situation. You could offer emotional support to one another.

Unfortunately, there are no easy solutions... you are going to have to work hard to make up for your past mistakes. My suggestion would be to call your credit card companies and explain your situation. Tell them that you have every intention of paying off the cards in full, but that you will need their help. Ask for lowered interest rates or lowered minimum monthly payments. Also find out if they are offering any NO FEE balance transfers. If they are, arrange for portions of debt from cards with HIGHER INTEREST RATES to be transferred. Most cards will want to work with you because they lose the money if you file for bankruptcy.

As for the friends and family that you owe money to, contact them and thank them again for the loan and assure them that you still intend to return the money as soon as possible. Tell them what you are doing to fix your situation. Communication is important. You do not want them to get the impression that you are avoiding them. This could lead to a serious rift in the relationship.

Thank you, although I've already done the majority of these things this is why its so bad!

I cannot have a flat mate as I only have a studio apartment, no bedroom, not even really big enough for me! All the people I owe money to and creditors are aware of the situation but will not stop hassling. I work 10/14 hours a day 6 days a week and I get paid well but by the end of the week I'm shattered I don't think I have the strength to do another job unless it was one I could do from home but they are usually scams.

Do you know of any strange ways of obtainnig large loans when the credit is as bad as mine as I really think this is my only option now. I f I could pay everything and make one payment it would be so much cheaper and a lot less stressful?

One of the best Debt management Companies in the UK is Payplan: Debt Management Plans, Free Debt Management Company and IVAs | Debt Advice | Payplan (http://www.payplan.com/)

They are well regarded within the financial industry and, as they are a charity, DON'T charge monthly fees. Give them a call and they will be able to help.

Just put of interest how many of these debts have been to court or passed to Debt collectors ?

Sorry I feel like I'm throwing all options out the window.. but I've tried this too, Payplan will help but not with my CCJ's which means I still have to make these payments on top of a monthly payment to payplan and it gets far too exspensive.

I owe between 12 - 15 creditors all of which have gone to debt collectors a couple of years ago and they are still trying. They don't have my correct address as I'm terrified they will pursuit the baliff action they have been theatening, even though I have nothing they can take. 3 have gone as far as court and are now CCJ's.

They can ONLY take further enforcement action, i.e. bailiffs, if the debt has been to court.
UK Debt Collectors say a lot of things, mostly threats, which they can never carry out.

Payplan CAN work around CCJ's as they will only deal with excess income after all of your outgoings are taken into account.
