The refrigerator needs to be stored vertically. If you have to lay a refrigerator on its side for transport, let it stand upright for 24 hours to let the oil drain back into the compressor before plugging it in.
It needs to be raised off the ground, so set it on a wooden pallet. It also needs to be protected from the elements, under a roof is best, but at least under a tarp.
Very Important: Either take the door off, or secure it so children can't get inside. An old refrigerator makes a good hiding place, a good place for the cops to lock up the robbers, or even an interplanetary spaceship!
