I came to the US on F1 in Aug 2005, I was on OPT from Oct 2007-Oct2008. I joined my current place of work in Nov 2007. My company withheld social security and medicare taxes in 2008. I know I am FICA exempt for the first 9 months in 2008, hence I should get a refund. I asked my company for the refund and they have agreed to issue me a refund, However I do have issue with the amount of money they are refunding me.

Total social security in 2008: $ 3227.18
Total Medicare in 2008 : $ 754.78

Refund they are giving is : $1872

My question is shouldn't the total of social security and medicare be added and divided by 12 to get the monthly contribution and then multiply this by 9 to get the amount of my total refund.
Thant would be
Total : $3981.96
Each month : $ 331.83

Hence for 9 months : $2986.47

Fine , even if they charge a 20% federal tax on this money, I should get :$2389.00.

So it looks like they are giving me $500.00 short
