Is it possible for a father in Canada to relinquish his rights as a parent and not have to pay child support? He was tricked into the pregnancy and doesn't want to have any kind of relationship with the mother of the child, he feels it would be better for the child if he was not involved at all... Can you please tell me the steps he needs to take to get this taken care of...
Thank you..

Hello r:

Look, I'm an old man. I've had lots of women. I can't remember one of them who tricked me into screwing her.

Maybe you're different. I don't know.

But, if the laws in Canada are the same as in the US, the father is going to have to support his child until he's 18 - tricked or not.

You must be the new girlfriend.

So now he thought about the situation with his baby moma and decide it is in his best interest to terminate his rights so he won't be stuck paying child support for the next 18 years. To even add to his dilemma, now he is saying he was trick.

To bad for him because he is going be stuck paying child support, whether, if he chooses to be bother with the child.

He does not have to be a part of the child or mother's life... but until she gets married and wants her husband to adopt, your boyfriend better get used to writing a check to her

From what I can find, Canada courts operate similarly to US courts in this area. Basically they will only terminate parental rights to clear the way for an adoption or if the parent represents a danger to the child.

Whether he wants to be a part of the baby's life or not is his choice. But he has a responsibility to support that baby since he contributed to its existence. The courts will not let him out of that responsibility.
