I know nothing about plumbing, and very little about home repair. We bought our first (older) house almost a year ago and it is forcing me to learn quickly!

I have noticed water leaking from around the base of our shower stall. It doesn't happen while we are taking a shower, it will happen gradually over night or I will come home from work and see the bathmat soaked. Also, it is not a continuous leak. We may go a few days with no problem, then all of a sudden we will have the slow leak for a couple of days or so.

The caulking around the outside edge of the shower needs to be replaced and the water seems to be coming out from under the edge of the shower and the baseboards of the wall next to it. Will re-caulking fix the problem, or will it just redirect the water into my walls and floor? Could there be something wrong with the piping or the drain? I have no idea how these showers are installed, so I do not know what could be going on under the floor of the shower.

Can you snap a photo of your shower and post it ? It would be very helpful...

When you say "shower stall" you mean One Piece Pre-Fab shower unit ? What kind of front enclosure do you have ? Glass ? Shower curtain ?

In the interim, do this: Clean dry floor. Have somebody to enter shower and pretend to take shower. You stand on the outside and watch for streaks of water. Have them to aim running shower head towards the shower door / shower curtain, as well...

Yes, it is a one piece shower unit and the front enclosure is a shower curtain. Since we started having the leak, we have been very careful about the curtain being closed when taking a shower. Like I said, it does not appear as if water is leaking out during a shower (like from the curtain) because there is no puddle or anything after someone showers. It is happening slowly, over a matter of hours, seemingly unrelated to whether anyone even took a shower that day!
