I was caught shoplifting and have been referred to the alternative measures program. I am going on a trip to Africa before I participate in this program. Will this cause any problems with me leaving the country? I have already made arrangements to attend the program when I get back, but the director was not sure if it would cause any problems. Help!

Unless there was a stipulation with your sentencing that said you could not leave the country then there should be no problem. To set your mind at ease, you can call the court. If you had an attorney, call him or her; if you represented yourself then call the prosecuting attorney's office and ask.

As long as the court has not set a order for you not to.

If you were precluded from leaving the country, you would have HEARD it, and/or it would be WRITTEN on your court papers.

Plus, I would NEVER get my legal advice from the "director" or your program, a court clerk OR the prosecutor.
