Hi

My daughter is 4 1/2 months old and I have been introducing solids to her for the past couple of weeks which is working wonderfully but I am concerned as I am not sure what her formula intake should be now, she is having on average 22 - 27 oz per day? Is this too much or to little? Obviously on the back of a milk tub it doesn't reduce until 6 months as this is the recommended weaning stage? Can anyone help in tell me what is the recommended intake of formla milk while weaning a four month old?

Thanks

You are seeing the reduction noted on the tin at 6 months because this is the current recommendation for when to start solids for most babies. Some formula fed babies, however, may benefit starting a bit sooner as they may not be getting the full level of nutrients they need from formula alone as they get a bit older. Others would benefit from holding off awhile longer on the solids... especially if you have any family history of asthma or allergies.

Depending on her weight, she may be getting right around what she would need... that would be for about 12 pounds. Always offer the formula first... any solids should be a small amount afterwards for now. Her main source of nutrition for the first year will be mostly from the formula and you don't want it being replaced by too much in the way of solids too soon. There will be a gradual shift to more solids and less formula when she gets older.
