Hi,

I would like to explain my personal situation, and then, let me please know what do you suggest

Background:
I arrived to USA with my wife and daughter on Oct 22, 2007 under a J1 (I got some money from my country to stay there for 3 months). I started to be paid with a USA founds on January 18, 2008 and ended on Dec 31, 2008. We left USA on Feb 23, 2009 (we stayed during jan and Feb with our money). My appointment was for a J1 postodctoral position

Questions:
1) Which of the following items I can deduct?

Rent:
Moving Expenses:
Gasoline of a Borrowed car
A laptop to work
Others??

2) Which are the forms I must complete in order to get those deductions?

Thanks,
Juan, from Argentina (there is not a tax treaty between USA and Argentina)

Your stay exceeded 12 months, so you cannot claiming living expenses.

Since there is NO tax treaty, you cannot claim any income tax exemption.

You need to file Forms 1040NR, 3903 (to claim moving expenses from Argentina to the U.S.) and 8843 (to validate your J-1 status).

You CANNOT claim either your wife or daughter as a dependent.

You WERE exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes. If these taxes were withheld improperly, you may need to submit Form 843 and 8316 to get them refunded to you.
