I am having problems with a desktop icon that starts to open, but then closes. I have un-installed it and re-installed it. Still no luck. I have Windows XP. Every other icon seems to be working. This is an application that is networked among other users, but their computers have no problems. Any suggestions?

Try right clicking on icon and choose properties and then click the Find Target button to see if it can find it and change it to proper location

If that does not help, go to where you installed the program to and find the exe file that is supposed to run the application and click on it - If it opens properly, go back to that file that open the app and right click on it and choose Send to.. and choose Send to Desktop Shortcut

Hope this helps

Thanks for the prompt reply! I have tried all of that. I have gone to the exe file and when I click on it, it starts to download the application again, but the icon still does not work. It opens and starts to put settings, etc, in; but then closes. It's almost as if windows will not accept this application. Is that possible? I have gone into administrators window and downloaded it, plus my windows, and downloaded it. I've noticed I have problems with my registry. I can get it, but it will not stay up. It closes out before I can do anything. Just today I downloaded a registry cleaner. The desktop icon will still not open. I have gone into the "F" drive and can get a log on screen for this application, but it just puts another icon on my desktop that doesn't work. We have even added a new user and tried to download the application. No luck, the desktop icon still will not stay open. Sorry to be a pain.

What application are you trying to run?

This is an application that is networked among other users, but their computers have no problems.

Is the only location this is installed on is the PC you are having problem with getting to run but others can run it from your PC, just not yourself?

This is my work computer. Our computers are networked. I load the program into the "F" drive on my computer and go to the other computers, and download their computers from the "F" drive, instead of taking the cd to each computer. It is our shared network drive. Their computers are not having problems. It is a program from a cd. Maybe it is not called an application. (I don't know) It is a program from where we do business from. (I don't know the proper name for them either.) I have called them and they are no help.

Just trying to think of a workaround

As it is on your computer, see if you can install it just for yourself on C: drive - unless you have a shared database that needs info saved to and brought up again on F:

Do you have access to the other PC's through the LAN? If so, see if you can make a new shortcut on your desktop that points to one of the other PC's shortcut they are using.

I do have it installed on drive c, but the icon doesn't work from their either. I have installed it on the c drive and the f drive. Logged in as administrator and as myself. Nothing works. I don't think I have access to the other pc's because if I did their pc's would be screwed up like mine? We have a shared drive s. I could install on there and see if I could get the icon to work, however, I wouldn't think it would since it doesn't work on the c or f drive. I read on the internet that windows.net framework controls the application of some software? So,Today, I went to the add/remove programs. I clicked on microsoft.netframework 2.0 service pack 2 and microsoft.netframework 3.0 service pack 2. I thought if something was wrong with them, I would repair. Couldn't hurt, I would think. However, they could not be repaired. So I do think there is something wrong with them. It said I needed to find the folder that netfx20a_x86.msi and netfx30a_x86.msi were in. I did a search and they could not be found. Maybe my windows installer is faulty? (If there is such a thing) I'm not really that computer literate.

I looked on system information report. The first time I could not get the program, it says: .Net Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting Faulting application visiongui.exe, version 7.2.11.4468, stamp 0000003a, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, stamp 4802a12c, debug? 0, fault address 0x00012aeb.

I am looking on my computer at home in the add/remove programs and I see Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) support info is Microsoft corp. version 3.1. I wonder if I could remove the Windows Installer on my work computer and re-install from Microsoft?

PS the application "visiongui.exe" is the program I am trying to get. The CD I have is supposed to be a complete version of this program. (So there should not be any updates to this cd)

I really appreciate your thinking about this, as I am sure you know more about pc's than I.
I do enjoy a challenge, but it's been 2 weeks, and I'm just about fed up.

Thanks

First uninstall the application

Here is windows installer 4.5

These download packages will update the version of Windows Installer on your system to version 4.5.
Download details: Windows Installer 4.5 (http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en)

Have you gone to windows update since all this started happening to see what updates may be avail?

Here is the latest net framework 2.0 update before they updated to 3.0 and 3.5 - I would attempt to install this first and then go to windows update and update related products - don't worry if this is already installed, this would reinstall, if it does not let you, go right to windows update

.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
Download .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 / 2.0 / 1.1 - Provides the latest updates to the .NET Framework - Softpedia (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Microsoft-NET-Framework-Service-Pack.shtml)

If all works out OK, try reninstalling app again
