My friend and I rented a house together with our kids in February, shortly after we moved in we started noticing a bad smell coming from the bathroom drank. We didn't think much of it, at that time, now the smell is it entering in the bedroom next to it, we have only lived their a little over 1 month and all of us has been sick at least 3-4 time each. I did found out that house in on a septic tank system, but I don't see any wet spot around the property. I am very worry about this smell, I have a child with a heart condition. What good, this smell be, and what would be making all of sick in the home. Please help.

Hi Sabastion:

Look around under the sinks in the bathroom(s) and see if you can find an AAV (air admittance valve)... see picture. If present, it is possible that the vent has failed and needs to be replaced. Here, simply unscrew the old AAV and purchase/install a new one.

Otherwise, are there any drains/fixtures that you guys aren't using? Any sinks, showers or floor drains around.. say in the laundry room that you haven't been using YET? These situations can lead to a PTRAP drying out which can allow sewer gasses to enter into the home... unhealthy and smelly!

Look around.. let us know what you discover...
