Let me introduce myself. I don't smoke.

I regularly work out, and I eat healthy and usually meet the recommended daily food intake. I'm fairly active.

This morning, however, I had a sharp pain in my chest and I was coughing up some bright red blood, and it continued for a bit. It didn't really hurt other than in my chest, and I had a stinging sensation in my chest. I'm going to the doctor's later, but I'm wondering if there's anything I should do in the meantime to lessen the pain.

Who gave you the diagnosis of 'hemoptysis ? It is fairly common, but when diagnosed it has to be determined exactly where the blood is coming from broncial trees or lungs, or from some other source. What I am saying is, it may not be hemoptysis. One doesn't have to smoke to have lung prob lems.

The doctor is the only one who can recommend for the pain.

I was just building upon experience. Essentially, I coughed red blood, and I checked up a bit online while making an appointment. I'm not look for treatment right now, but just how to quell this pain.

The fact you are coughing up blood, coupled with the pain is not good sign. Especially when the blood coul d be coming from 2 or 3 sources in your chest. You say you work out, well I would take a holiday from that if you are still coughing up blood. Experiencing pain and don't want to seek medical attention, which I urge you to do.

Most hemoptysis is due to bronchitis, a over the counter cough suppressant may help.

Most serious causes to consider would be a pulmonary embolus, an abscees eroding into a pulmonary vessel, lung cancer.
