If you truly love animals do your homework. The US allows 300,000 dogs into the country from overseas a year. Why? Don't know. These dogs are for sale. If there is an abundance of dogs needing homes then why are they allowing dogs to come in from foreign countries?

Why are people supporting Designer dogs? They are mutts. It is what happens when your Poodle gets out and mates with your neighbors bulldog. Don't believe everything you hear about these dogs. If you breed a dog with a heart problem to another with the same problem you are going to have that problem in your puppy. Just because you breed a Poodle to another dog, it does not make the puppies shed-free.

Do your homework before you buy any dog. They all have health problems. Mutts have health problems, purebreds have health problems, humans have health problems. It is part of living, nothing is perfect. I show Pomeranians. They have health problems. But the American Pomeranian Club and the American Kennel Club have been doing serious research on these and the AKC is actively working on health problems of all breeds.

Don't let PETA/HSUS brainwash you into thinking that all dogs are bad, suffering and being treated in a cruel fashion. They have to hunt for these things and then they twist the stories to fit their agenda. They fake pictures and stories to shock you into thinking what they want you to think.

Puppymills? Yes they are awful and do we want to see them closed. Yes, any responsible dog lover would. But to attack all breeders, charge breeding fees to active show homes or to attack dog lovers in general is wrong and that is what the animal rights people are doing.

They want all animals extinct. Listen to what they say. Spay neuter all dogs then 2 generations and they are gone. Can we live in a world without our pets. I couldn't. Pets are good for us mentally and physically. Do I agree with breeding just so the kids can see birth absolutely not. Pets should be spayed and neutered, absolutely.

But don't condemn the responsible breeders that do the health test, spay and neuter dogs with health problems and only breed for the betterment of the breed. We are trying to get away from bad patellas by having OFA x-rays on all breeding dogs, Having Cerf test, ECHO's on hearts, Eye test to prevent these diseases. Do you think this is cheap? No it isn't. Poms have 1-3 puppies in a litter normally. To make any money on these dogs you would have to charge an outrageous amount of money. If you are breeding ethically you are not making money.

Do some serious research on PETA and HSUS. Don't just read their propaganda. Dive into the PETA Kills Animals web site and you will see where all the money is really going. They bail arsonist out of jail and support some of the worst terrorist in the country. See where they are listed on the FBI's terrorist list. It is all eye opening.

We never condemn a reputable breeder who has all of the qualifications, and has done all of the research required, to breed dogs. These are the good guys, and not the bad guys. The people that breed and preserve a bloodline, for the love of the breed, and not to make money. As you said, any reputable breeder is not in it for the money, as they understand that the costs to responsibly breed, far outweigh any profit.

We do however get hot under the collar, when day after day, we have another backyard breeder that does not have the first clue about what they are doing. They just think it's "cute," to have a litter just for "fun." Then there are the ones that buy a puppy from a backyard breeder, for a ridiculous amount of money, and then drop it off at the shelter 2 weeks later, because it peed on their floor. Then they are angry because they had to pay a fee at the shelter to drop it off. Then there are the ones that support the puppymill industry, by plunking down their credit card at a pet store like Petland, that is dealing with their broker to "order" more puppies like they were truckload of meat.

I myself have done a lot of research on Peta and HSUS. HSUS were an advocate to have all of Michael Vicks dogs put down. These poor dogs were abused all of their lives, and the HSUS wants to murder them after this abuse? That is appalling, and I will not support neither of these organizations. Their practises are unethical and promote cruelty to animals. They are wolves in sheeps clothing.

So no, we do not condemn the reputable breeders. It is quite the opposite.

PETA has brainwashed the Legislators in the country that all breeders are bad. Dallas was once a dog friendly city but not anymore. PETA is in charge of the City Counsel and the animal shelter and it has turned into a sad affair for people that love their dogs. There are dog limits, the animal control can come into your home without a warrant and just take your animals and you do not have an argument. They are just gone and you can not ever get them back. I thought I lived in the United States but I'm beginning to wonder. It is no longer the land of the free.

Wonderful post Darleyne. As Starby said, we don't condemn reputable breeders. I myself have a beagle from a breeder, I checked her out thoroughly before adopting our puppy.

What we are trying to put a stop to is backyard breeders, puppymills, pet stores that sell puppymill dogs, etc. etc.

When someone comes to this site asking a question like "when can I breed my dog?" or "how long will my dog be pregnant?" or "the puppies where born without skulls, is it the males sperm that caused this?" then it's pretty clear these people aren't reputable breeders. They get our wrath because we personally deal with way too many of them.

If I had a dime for every backyard breeder that comes to this site asking for advice, I'd be a very wealthy woman.

It's a sad situation that not only the US, but Canada also are involved in. PETA are a group of extremists, and their name itself is a hypocritical use of the words "ethical treatment." There is nothing ethical about their blatant misuse of those words. If there is, well there goes my whole belief system down the drain.

I hate puppymills. My husband bought my first Pom at a flea market. Didn't know any better. That poor baby was suppose to be " tiny toy" (there is not such thing). He ended up weighing 24 lbs but we loved him anyway. Then he had to have patella surgery on one leg and needed it on the other. Then one night he was walking across the room and let out a scream that would wake the dead. We took him to the emergency vet, had x-rays done which showed a ruptured disc. He stayed there for 3 days for pain control and steriod injections. We brought him home and had an appointment at the specialist in Dallas the following day. He died that night. We think he threw a clot from his back and he was gone instantly.
All of this pain and heartache was caused by a greedy puppymiller. I tried to have her shut down but no one would or could do anything. When I told her what I thought of her, yes she was there after 3 years, she said I could do what ever I wanted because her husband was an attorney. Big deal.

It's stories like these that make me want to curl up in the fetal position, suck my thumb and cry. The only ones that suffer are the poor dogs. We just have to hope that karma will catch up to this women. To me, karma would be her getting attacked by the very animals she exploits. I'd pay money to see it. ;)

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup dying Darlyene. Some people are just so ignorant and careless. All they see is dollar signs. Then to pull out the lawyer card, well that is just plain trailer trash nonsense.

This is a wonderful post! I think it would make a good sticky. I am by far not fan of PETAS true face. They absolutely disgust me. What they do behind closed doors is despicable and against everything they advocate. What is truly sad is all of the caring people who donate their money to PETA thinking they are helping to save lives when their money is truly just paying for the euthanasia.

I can see PETAs point! They are saying that "all dogs should be spayed or neutered" yes, so there isn't a massive influx of unwanted dogs! They couldn't really say "all dogs should be spayed or neutered unless you are a reputable breeder" because then every backyard breeder in the world would claim to be "reputable".
They are just pushing the message to all the 'less informed' people who decide to breed dogs because they need the money or think that having their own puppy would be cute and don't worry about what happens to the other 5 puppies in the litter.

I'm afraid that you are missing the point. They want ALL dogs spayed and neutered. If all women had a hysterectomy there would be NO humans after the last one dies. That is what they want. It is not rational.
Please read the information that I first printed. Go to the web sites and really read what they are doing and what their real goal is. They are dangerous.
I think that all pets should be spayed and neutered. I think that all dogs that have known defects should be spayed and neutered. But to say that All dogs should be spayed and neutered is crazy.
