My parents live within the state of Oregon and they used own a single-wide trailer. They sold the trailer about 15 years ago and they were doing some research on another subject pertaining to their property. They found out that the person that bought the trailer never transferred the title. Now my parents were told by the assessor they owe taxes on it since 2004. They know where the trailer is located and communicated by phone with the current individual who has care, custody and control of the trailer. They were told, the people who had the trailer left it or were kicked off the other individual's property and left the trailer behind. What can they do to get this matter rectified if individual who has the trailer won't pay the taxes on it? Can they claim back the trailer in place of them paying the taxes on it if it comes to that? They don't owe anything themselves but since it is still in their names...

The FIRST thing they need to do, is file a sale completion memo with the state department of motor vehicles. I don't know what it's called in your state, but if they had filed it with the department when the sale happened, they wouldn't be charged now.

They DON'T have to depend on the new owner to relieve them.

I don't think they're going to get the trailer back because it's been sold or transferred again. They should just pay the taxes and try to sue their original buyer for it. I'll bet they can also get them reduced if they met with the assessor.. Or, if they want the trailer back, they can always hire an attorney to try.
