You can't do the math that way.

It is false to say each man paid 9, or 27 "each for the room". They did NOT pay 9 each for the room. They paid for the room AND the bell hop "bonus".

Initially, each man paid 10 each, for 30 total to the hotel. 30 from the men, 30 in the hotel pockets.

Then the hotel took five dollars out. This means 25 was paid to the hotel, not 27.

Each man was refunded a dollar, and the other two went to the bell hop.

Essentially, the men shouldve paid 8.33 each to the hotel...

Instead they paid 8.33 to the hotel (and not 9) for a total of 25 dollars, and the other 0.66 ea to the bellhop...

So... if its not clear...

8.33+8.33+8.33 by the men was spent on the room and given to the hotel... 25 dollars.

0.67+0.67+0.67 was given to the bellhop... 2 dollars.

The remaining 3 dollars? In the mens pockets.

This is how the 9 dollars each was spent. 27 out of pocket... 27 in someone else's pockets.

The remaining 3 dollars should be treated like they never left.

To say 9 each was spent on the room is the false statement. 9 was spent by each man, but not on the room alone.

correct KP, evidently I can't rate u atm. The key is that 9 was spent by each but not just on the hotel, the way you state the answer you basically leave a portion of the equation out/misstate it. They are paying 25 for the hotel so its divided by 3. that is the key point.

correct KP, evidently i can't rate u atm. the key is that 9 was spent by each but not just on the hotel, the way you state the answer you basically leave a portion of the equation out/misstate it. they are paying 25 for the hotel so its devided by 3. that is the key point.

So
"8.33+8.33+8.33 by the men was spent on the room and given to the hotel... 25 dollars"

And

"9 was spent by each man, but not on the room alone." differs from your answer how??

All you did was restate what I said without trying to explain.

No big deal. Its just a silly puzzle. But why state I left out anything when, if anything, I said all you said and more...

No was saying the OP's question is inaccurate/leaves out stuff. I wouldn't have said anything really if I could have just rated you. But the system wouldn't let me, hence the post. Sorry for the confusion.

The "hook" is the suggestive notion that causes the reader to try to change directions in the middle of the equation. $30.00, minus $3.00 ($1.00 to each man) = $27.00. From there, you continue the equation in the same direction ($2.00 to the bellhop = $25.00). Still, a clever riddle.

While you all sound very clever, I think the bellhop dropped on the floor. Lol
