I think you mean fractions that do not have the same denominator (the bottom number). Let's imagine 1/2 and 2/3.

-- Multiplying fractions is the easiest. If you have 1/2 x 2/3, you just multiply the numerators (top number) together, and the denominators together. So, since 1x2=2,and 2x3=6, the answer is 2/6 (same as 1/3)

-- Adding fractions is the tougher one. You have to find a common denominator. In other words, you can't add apples to oranges. So you find a number that both 2 and 3 divide into. How about 6. You change each fraction so it has a denominator of 6.

So, since 1/2=3/6, and 2/3=4/6, you now can add the two. To add fractions with the same denominator, you add the numerators together only, and just keep the denominator.

So, 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6. That is the same as 1- 1/6.
