How much do you charge when you have a repair for red brick steps. Some just need some cosmetic touchup and other need to be redone? I do not like charging by the hour so I would like to charge by the job.

Without pictures to see how much repair is needed this question is out there.
To answer the question it would be good to know base rates for masonry work where you have this work
Need all but perfect description of how many bricks are loose, bad joints that will need grounded out and pointed.
What color of the mortar and approx how old are the steps etc etc.
You say you do not like to charge by the hour but YOU need to know what your hourly base rates is to get to a figure.
If work is added to the steps and the customers ask how much for the extras, what are you going to say at that point?
I can give you a real broad estimate for you to go with, But since you asked this question I assume you are not a Mason or you are a mason and don't have any idea what the skill level here is. That alone would null and void my guess here for you.
I'm saying this to you as a professional mason since 76. I need better info from you on skill levels etc
I'm just guessing here but are you getting estimates for these steps and want to check and see if it's a good estimate by others?

There are 166 bricks involved. 6 are totally loose and the rest need mortar tuck. The mortar color is a tan color and the steps are about 12 years old. These all have to do with the side of the patio and steps to the front of the house. I don't charge by the hour because I would be too slow for that so I charge by the job and that way the customer knows up front what they are paying.

Gotcha you and thanks for being honest!!
Just to start of let the customer know that no matter what you do to match the mortar will look a bit different in color no matter what.I custom mix mortars ansd still its all but impossible to match aged mortar 100%
Being slow is fine, being good at it is most important and speed comes with time.
Basically any small job I do is a day no matter what in this situation.
Min here would be $375.00 with out materials.
Be sure to let the customer know exactly what you are going to fix. Too many time with loose brick you find more. Wiggle all brick to be sure what's loose or not. Look for hairline cracks and wiggle the brick hard with your hand. Donuts to dollar there will be 2 times more loose brick.
So for a reg Manson we would knock that out in half a day or 3+ hours with getting materials too.
Basically you are doing a service call/repair. The service call min is $75.00 plus time spent.
Hope this helps you get an Idea of pricing.
