We're installing 2x2 drop ceiling in a laundry area and are considering lighting options. Standard fixtures will not give quite enough light. We do not really care for can lights. I think we could put in 2x4' fluorescent drop in fixtures in the 2x2 grid, but the spacing is not quite right. Anyone know of a good 2x2' drop-in fixture? Are bed-and-bath bulbs available in 24"?

Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks!

Google "Troffer"

'troffer lighting' came up with a bunch of useful items

Does 'troffer' imply appropriate for drop ceiling, or does that need to be specified?

Seems like T8 fluorescent bulb is the standard, now I need to decide whether to go straight or U-shape on the bulb. I think that will be determined by price, availability, and if I can get "kitchen and bath"

Thanks for the help!

If you get a 2x2 troffer fixture for your utility room you will need all the light you can get. I recommend you get a fixture that will hold (2) FB32T8 lamps. It is a newer electronic ballast style and the most energy efficient for the application with the light output that you need. When looking for a lamps to put in use an 800 series lamp that you find at the lighting showroom or electrical supply house, not the hardware store. 800 series lamps are about 600 lumens morelight output than a standatd 700 series lamp. They have much better color rendering and rated for 10,000 more hours. 841 lamps are cool white and 850 lamps are blue white. I suggest 850 for utility rooms. 888-316-BULB if you have any other questions about lighting or lightbulbs. Ask for John

good information, patcolamp, thanks

it is a 10 x 20' area, so we thought 3 fixtures would provide plenty of light.

backing up a bit, does 2x2 troffer light imply use in a drop-ceiling situation, or not always?

Yes, a troffer style fixture is for a laying grid type ceiling. Make sure you get a commercial grade fixture from an electric supply house or lighting showroom. This way you can keep a receipt for warranty purposes. Hardware stores have cheap fixtures and getting replacement parts is a nightmare. Make sure and also get the bright lights. 850 series.
