My niece is 14 weeks pregnant and has just got a puppy. Is there anything that could harm the baby?

Why would she bring this much work into her life ! No, but she will have to clean up after the pup while being pregnant and if she doesn't wash her hands good enough, then that may be a problem.
Why visit this much work on oneself ?
If everything is handled properly, no, nothing can harm the baby.
What a really bad choice at the moment !

I know that's what her family have said to her! So , as long as she's careful and thorough with hygiene there should't be a problem.. thank you

Some people think that, it would be nice to have a puppy to raise with a baby, but actually the puppy reaches maturity a lot sooner then the baby and then creates problems, and then the puppy is no longer required because it is too much work. Sad, but true, so it is an unfortunate arrangement. Young dogs need so much more time and care and love.

I'm sorry, but I don't necessarily agree with Tickle. The problems come with cat feces, not with dogs, so there is no worry there.
She's only 14 weeks pregnant, if she is consistent, all of the house training should be completed by the time the baby arrives.
Now it DOES matter the kind of dog she has. Some are great with kids others are not.
With each of my children came a new puppy during my pregnancies. They became very protective of the kids and the kids had some feeling of responsibility as they grew up.

Thank you for all your replies which were very helpful. She has decided not to keep the puppy as she already found it too much to cope with.
