I live in NY and am employed in NY but am sent to work in other states when needed. Am I required to file taxes for every state they send me to work in, or just NY?

Assuming you are paid by the same employer in NYS for all of your "jobs," you only file NYS. You are not a resident anywhere else or, for that matter, are you paid anywhere else.

For every state where you worked. For some states your income may be less than the filing requirements.
If you are present in a state, then any income earned during this period, must be reported to the state.
To your resident state, you must report your worldwide income for the year. Read: Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/06/working-in-two-or-more-states.html)

There is no hard-and-fast rule, but, generally, if you earn MORE than $4,000 in any one state, that state expects a tax return to account for that money earned within their state borders.
