I have a 14.5 hp briggs motor that starts but won't do anything else. It won't acceletate. The choke has to be on or it won't start at all. I gapped the plug to 28, was 18. No difference. Dump gas in carb and won't start cause it is flooded. When running and dump in gas it dies, flooded. Turn air mixture in all the way, nothing, out all the way, nothing. Took carb apart and cleaned, float good, cleaned out all the little holes, and still idles but no rev. Help!

The air mixture screw should not have been adjusted. Run it all the way back in & then back it out 2-3 turns. Remove the cylinder head being careful not destroy the head gasket. Remove all the carbon build-up from the head, piston & valves. Reattach the head to the engine ensuring all bolts are tight. Dump all fuel from the gas tank & re-fill with fresh gas. The gas in your portable container may also be too old to use. Buy some fresh gas. The fact that the engine starts indicates ignition is OK although the spark plug gap is still in question. Compression will have been improved by cleaning the head. Ensure all the bolts that mount the carburetor assy to the engine are tight to eliminate air/vacuum leaks. It has been my experience that using premium gas in all small engines eliminates a lot of problems. The cost is negligible while reducing a lot of maintenance
