I use oil heat in my home and I want to install a tankless water heater, basically because my oil usage lately has been hurting my pockets so I want to try the alternative which is a tankless water heater. Has anyone installed one in their home or know of anybody that has installed one in their home, is there any difference in your bill or a difference in the length of time you can shower or any bad experiences that you have encountered?

I hope you have Natural Gas in your house. If positive, than you will love tankless heaters.

I am factory trained and licensed installer of Rinnai tankless hot water heaters. I also have 2 tankless heaters installed in my own house since 2002. One services my master bathroom, the second one services rest of my house.

Tankless heater will turn on Only when there is demand for hot water. Therefore, it doesn't keep reheating hot water 24/7/365 even when there is no demand. With tankless hot water you will get endless hot water showers. As result, your gas bill will be proportionally lower.

The start up cost may be high. You will probably have to run dedicated gas line to the unit. But once that is done, you will not even know you have a heater. There are great units, have life expectancy 3x of conventional water heaters and look good, as well.

There are several models on market these day. I personally think Rinnai is the best. This opinion is based on 7 years of installing Rinnais for my customers with Zero negative feedback as well as having two Rinnai's installed in my own house. However, Noritz is catching up and I think it is a great unit as well. Pricewise, both brands are just about the same: around +/- $1,000.00 + accessories. Be careful with other brands, like Bradford White, Rheem, especially Bosh Aqua Star or Paloma offered by Home Depot. They are under-performers.
