I need to block Facebook from someone in our household. I'm using Windows Vista and the newest version of Firefox. Does anyone know how to do this? :o

Super short answer: Yes, someone knows how to do it. Go to OpenDNS Parental Controls (http://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/solutions/parental) and see if that's what you want.

Longer answer: There are many ways, my current choice would be to sign up at opendns.com, and use your control panel to block facebook.com. It's a free service, and has many categories of sites that you can block, and you can also add your own personal choices.

You can set it up in Windows, MacOS, Linux, and even inside your router, if you have one of the supported ones. Check out the site, it's free and easy.

That being said, though, the Net was built with the idea that it should be able to survive even if 2/3ds of it were blown away by a nuclear war, so if your "someone" is technically capable, you might have trouble keeping them from getting wherever they want to go. If you can lock 'em out at your router, you are pretty safe. If you can keep them from higher privilege levels of Vista, opendns will likely do the trick for you, although they could enter the address directly (69.63.176.140 or 69.63.178.11) in the address bar.

If you have a router, you can tell it to block all web traffic, or limit it to certain times of the day. Some will also let you specify sites to block or exceptions to blocking everything. I'd need a little more detail on your setup to give better advice.

There are also several free software applications you can use to block websites via host name and ip address. Here is an example of one we set up for my friend: K9 Web Protection - Free Internet Filtering and Parental Controls Software (http://www1.k9webprotection.com/)
Do a Google search for "free web content blocking"

Hope this helps.

Thanks to both of you for responding. The OpenDNS was a little confusing for me, but the K9 Web Protection worked perfectly, love it. Thanks again! :)
