We have old, squeaky floorboards in one of our upstairs bedrooms. Would like to carpet the room to reduce the noise of footsteps. Do we need to replace the flooring first? If so, what is a good, inexpensive hardwood flooring to use under carpeting? Thanks.

Is this old floor the tongue and grove pine or hardwood?
One good way would be to screw down the old floor board / ply where the joist are.
The other way to improve with that would be to use construction adhesive and glue and screw 1/2 sheeting down on top
The other is to saw out the bad spots and glue and screw 3/4 patches.
Try the screw method first.
