View Full Version : Washing machine won't drain

I was having a problem with my washing machine for the past few months: whenever it drained, water would back up terribly in my bathtub. It was, apparently, a clog in the main line that we couldn't get out on our own. Because of this, we didn't use the machine for about 3 weeks.

The past three weeks have been very very cold (sub zero temps) and we ended up having 2 pipes burst- had roto-rooter out to repair those pipes, and clear out our drain while they were here. They confirmed that the drain was clogged really badly, and after clearing the line they tried to run the washer to make sure everything was working okay before leaving.

Well, the machine filled up fine, but would not spin & drain. The room had been very cold (no heat in the laundry room) and the guys from roto rooter said that the water pump in the machine was probably frozen and it should defrost on its own over the next few days.

Does this sound accurate? Basically, once the machine comes to the spin cycle, you can hear it running, but it's not doing anything- like it's trying to spin but can't. It agitates and all, just won't spin and drain-

Is there anything else it could possibly be? Any way I can speed along the process of getting it un-frozen, if that's the case? Also, if there's something more complex wrong with it and the water pump needs to be replaced, how much would it cost for an appliance repairman to do this? I don't think our washer is still covered under the warranty (It's about 2 1/2 yrs old)-

Thanks!

Well if the pump froze in the washer I'm willing to beat it blew out the seals and bent the impellers in the pump. I would take out washer pump and inspect it. The pump will spin and make noise be if frozen water in it blew out the suction capabilities then it simply won't pump.
The pump has nothing to do with filling the machine nor the attataion

If that's the case, how much would it cost to get a repairman to come fix it? I don't even know where the pump is, and I would have no idea what I'm looking at-
Also, the machine is still full of water...
Waiting till morning to try again to put it on spin and see if it drains- this has happened once or twice before and after I let it sit for a while, it'd start working again... so I'm hoping!
