HI, I have a whirlpool electric stove. 2 big burners/coils don't work. my 2 small ones work from time to time. Sometimes I have to hit them or keep turning them on and off before it turns on. Actually it's the same with the big ones. The big one on the left I don't try anymore because one time I hit it to come on it sparked and had a little fire. Is there anything I can do to save this stove? Thank you!

Sounds like a bad connection at the point where the sparks come out.

If they are coming out of the infinite switch, then the switches are most likley shot. If they are coming out of the eye, then it's a bad connection where the eye plugs in.

You will need to replace any componets that are charred and repair any charred wire ends.

It it's a simple stove, and you don't want to pay someone to fix it, it may be just as easy to replace the stove.

In the mean time, don't use the stove until it's repaired, it sounds like it has numorous electrical issues and is a fire hazard.

How do I check to see if it's the burner of if it's the wiring?

Raising the lid on the stove should show you if there are any burned up wires by where the element is at.

However if you don't see any, that doesn't mean that there aren't bad wiring connections behind the panel where the switches (dials) are at.

An element normally either works or it doesn't so if its working some of the time, then I'm 95% sure it's not the elements. Most likley the switches.

Once an element blows that's it, it normally won't "start working again".
