View Full Version : Partition wall / ceiling

I want to install a "Z" shaped partition wall in a room with a drop ceiling. The drop ceiling is strung and hung past a lot of obstructions without anywhere for me to secure the top of my partition wall. Do I have to secure the partition wall to the ceiling as long as it is secure to the floor and both walls? It doesn't go straight across, it is going to be... 8'x8' across then back 4' then to the other wall 4'. Could I please get some tips on completing this project? Thanks, Dookiss2

No you don't have to nail or secure the wall to the ceiling. It can be built as a tall room divider.I assume this is a 2x4 construction. Instead of using a single top plate for the stud wall, double up on the top plate to give the wall more stability from shaking. Also if you want even more lateral strength Cut 2x4s approx. 14 1/2" and nail these in between the 2x4 16 OC studs. Stagger these sideways bracing between studs and you can have room to nail them and they should be about half way up the wall height. offset them by an 1 1/2" in different heights. If the wall is bumped the horizontal braces will help make the wall as one. Just think of the wall as a high cubical wall but to the ceiling.
