Yes. No doubt about it. Dogs can sometimes even smell infection and tumors.

Without a doubt! I have problems with my hip and back. My dog absolutely knows when I'm having an especially bad day. She will NOT leave my side, and in fact will put her paw where it hurts. My Niki has also saved my life, from carbon monoxide poisoning. I was fast asleep, and my detector was low on batteries and made a very faint beeping sound. She jumped on top of me, and started licking my face until I woke up. She then started running back and fourth and barking at the detector. When I finally realized what was happening, we got out of the house. I would have died in my sleep if it wasn't for her.

This is the reason they bring dogs into hospitals and nursing homes. They can sniff out cancer, MS, and so many life threatening diseases, as well as illnesses that haven't been detected by Dr.'s. They can sense when someone is about to have an epileptic seizure, or even something like an arthritic condition.

Dogs are very theraputic, and with their sense of smell being the greatest, they do sense illness and disease, and are also very good at calming patients with mental disorders.

The phrase "mans best friend" should be taken seriously. There are some people that unfortunately take their dogs for granted, and in some cases treat them with no respect or treat them inhumanely. A dog will always be there right beside his pack leader. He will never abandon the pack, even if he's treated badly, he is always ready to forgive.

So in answer to your question... ABSOLUTELY... without a doubt in my mind, dogs have a sixth sense when it comes to illness and disease.
