What is wrong with ceiling fan when it has a burning smell and is smoking?

Your motor and/or wiring went bye bye. I would unplug it and go buy a new one. Something in the wiring went. This could definitely be a fire hazard. Not worth burning your house down for the price of a new fan.

USUALLY a bad capacitor, easy fix.
